1. National Gallery Of Modern Art

The Ministry of Culture’s foremost art gallery in India, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), was founded in New Delhi in 1954 and now has branches in Bangalore and Mumbai. More than 17,000 artworks by more than 2000 artists, dating from 1857 to the present, are part of its extensive collection. Before the government got involved, it was the subject of factional conflicts among artists, having been first proposed by the AIFACS in 1938. The Society held its second international exhibition in 1953, which served as a prelude to the official founding of NGMA in 1954. Its initial curator was the German art historian Hermann Goetz. The gallery is still growing and also has services including a reference library and art restoration.

Founded in 2010, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) is the top private museum in India featuring modern and contemporary art, having locations in Noida and New Delhi. KNMA, which was first housed on the grounds of HCL Technologies, opened its doors to the public in 2010 and showcased Kiran Nadar’s vast collection of 20th-century art. Later, it relocated to Saket District Center’s South Court Mall, and soon, it will be near the Indira Gandhi International Airport in a brand-new David Adjaye structure. Famous Indian artists like Raja Ravi Varma and M.F. Husain, as well as foreign artists like Anish Kapoor and F.N. Souza, are represented in the KNMA collection.

The oldest contemporary art gallery in India, Dhoomimal Gallery (DMG), was founded in 1936 by Shri Ram Babu Jain. After more than eight decades, it shifted from being a commercial venue to an institution that supported Indian modern art. Shri Jain’s love of art inspired him to work with well-known painters, which resulted in the creation of DMG at Connaught Place. In the late 1930s, it sponsored forums such as “Kalakar” and provided support to artists. DMG prospered under the direction of Shri Ravi Jain starting in the 1970s, presenting important exhibitions and supporting artists such as M.F. Husain and F.N. Souza. Under the direction of Mr. Uday and Mrs. Uma Jain, DMG upholds its history by supporting artists and art worldwide.
