Art Dubai is the largest international art fair in the Middle East. It is held in March in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, every year. In the past 17 years, Art Dubai has solidified its position as a major catalyst for local, regional, and global discussions on art from the Middle East and surrounding areas (MENASA, Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia). It has played a major role in expanding these discussions beyond the conventional Western-led geographic scopes and narratives.
The dates for Art Dubai 2024 were recently announced. Art Dubai will come back for its 17th edition from 1st– 3rd March 2024 and will be held in its iconic home at Madinat Jumeirah. The preview will be held on the 28th and 29th of February 2023. Art Dubai 2024 will feature four sections including Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba, and Digital, as well as significant parallel programming, such as performances, commissions, education programmes, talks, and annual conferences. The gallery applications for Art Dubai Contemporary, Art Dubai Modern, Bawwaba, and Art Dubai Digital are also open.
The applications will be overseen by the Art Dubai Selection Committee, comprised of Priyanka Raja of Experimenter (Kolkata/Mumbai), Andrée Sfeir-Semler of Sfeir-Semler Gallery (Beirut/Hamburg), and Ursula Krinzinger of Galerie Krinzinger (Vienna). Applications from commercial art galleries from all around the globe are invited for Art Dubai Contemporary. Based on the curatorial merit of the gallery’s application and programme, the final selections will be made.
Art Dubai Modern will be curated by Dr. Christianna Bonin, curator, educator, art writer, as well as Assistant Professor of Art History at the American University of Sharjah. This section will “highlight the cultural dynamics that gave rise to today’s Global South. The post-World War II geopolitical landscape of these regions created intricate connections and cultural links, in particular for the many artists, musicians, architects, and filmmakers who studied in Soviet metropoles through Cold War-era exchanges.” The section will include artists and works from Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America to reflect the polyphonic character of these relationships. It will present a variety of viewpoints on a crucial aspect of twentieth-century contemporary art, revealing fresh artistic methods and viewpoints for Art Dubai’s audiences.
Bawwaba (meaning gateway in Arabic) will feature 10 individual exhibitions by artists from the Global South who see art as a space for reckoning and healing, where they may face social and political challenges, engage in critical discourse, and foster a feeling of community and belonging. It will feature their artworks that were created within the past year or those created especially for the fair.
Auronda Scalera and Alfredo Cramerotti, co-directors of the Metaverse’s IAM-Infinity Art Museum and the Multiplicity-XXnft publishing platform, are the curators for Art Dubai Digital. As they continue to research emerging trends in digital arts, AI, AR, VR, and NFTs, they will exhibit Art Dubai Digital via the lens of cutting-edge technology and provide potential solutions for the way in which art will be seen in the future.
With over 130 Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba, and Digital gallery displays from six continents, including more than 30 first-time participants, Art Dubai 2023 concluded with a big bang. We can only expect the same enthusiasm, if not better, from Art Dubai 2024.
