Chandrakant Sompura’s 32-Year Quest – Does Ayodhya’s Ram Temple Emerge as His Magnum Opus?

10 Ayodhya Ram Mandir Pictures to Look At

As India eagerly anticipates the consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22, the architectural brilliance behind this monumental project takes centre stage. Renowned architect Chandrakant Sompura and his team are in the limelight, their dedication and expertise marking a significant chapter in the nation’s history.

Genesis of the Vision: 32 Years in the Making

Recalling the genesis of the project, Sompura shared, “32 years ago, Ashok Singhal took me with him and told me to prepare a plan for the Ram Mandir to be constructed.” At that time, the plan was far from concrete, and Sompura even faced restrictions in taking measurements. Undeterred, he measured the area with his feet, laying the groundwork for the temple that is soon to open its gates, symbolising the resolution of a turbulent period in the nation’s past.

A Heritage of Temple Architecture

Chandrakant Sompura belongs to a revered lineage of temple architects, representing the 15th generation of his family from Ahmedabad. Despite lacking formal training in architecture, Sompura’s contributions are monumental, with over 200 temples constructed in India and abroad. Notably, his grandfather, PO Sompura, designed the revived Somnath Mandir in Gujarat in 1949.

Notable Achievements: From Akshardham to Ram Temple

Sompura’s portfolio includes iconic structures such as Akshardham in Gujarat, Mumbai’s Swaminarayan Mandir, and the Birla Mandir in Kolkata. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) approached Sompura for the Ram temple through the Birla family, highlighting the architect’s pivotal role in the prestigious project.

The Evolution of the Ram Temple Design

Initiated over three decades ago by Chandrakant Sompura, the Ram temple project underwent enhancements in design by his team, including his sons Ashish and Nikhil, in the presence of Ashok Singhal. Sompura has consistently emphasised the uniqueness of the temple’s design, stating, “There are temples everywhere, but this is the Ram Janmabhumi temple.” He further elaborated, “It will have rich carvings based on the Nagara shaily (style).”

A Special Project: Building at the Birthplace of Lord Ram

Speaking to PTI, Sompura expressed the significance of the project, stating, “This project is special as it is being built at the birthplace of Lord Ram. We have to ensure that it should be the best.” The Ram temple stands not only as an architectural marvel but also as a symbol of cultural and religious heritage, embodying the dedication and craftsmanship of Chandrakant Sompura and his illustrious lineage.
