Daakroom’s Letter Writing Carnival Celebrated in New Delhi, Honored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi

On October 29th of 2023, Daakroom concludes another run of their Letter Writing Carnival with a successful turnout. This one-day event gathered more than 8,000 participants at the Gandhi Darshan near Rajghat in the Indian Capital of Delhi. The aim of the event and organisation is to bring back the dying art of letter writing and postal services. The carnival did so by promoting a plethora of activities that included writing letters, creating stamps and appreciating other forms of Indian Art.

The highlight of the event is a personal letter of appreciation written by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging the efforts of the founders in “nation-building and inspiring the younger generation”

The multiple events at the carnival included a variety of stalls, activities and workshops, such as the Penpal Counter, Best Handwriting Competition, Letter Writing Competition, Live Calligraphy, Comic Making, Mandala Art, Madhubani & Warli Art etc. The carnival hence attracted people from various backgrounds which included students, teachers, artists and families, to give the new world digital generation a true postal experience.

The 2023 edition of Daakroom gained support from various notable organisations such as National Book Trust as Knowledge Partner, Amar Chitra Katha as Workshop Partner, and gifting partners like Instax, Pentel, Rootskills, Club Mahindra, Gopals56 and Little Fingers.

The founders of the Daakroom noted, “Seeing the large and enthusiastic crowd today overwhelms us, and we are confident that letter writing will grow in the future. We’re really grateful to our partners for trusting and supporting us generously”.

About Daakroom

The Daakroom initiative is co-founded by Harnehmat Kaur and Shivani Mehta, two friends who studied together at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. What initially started as a college college event slowly transitioned into a full-fledged organisation. The aim of the organisation is to re-introduce people to letters, and re-establishing the relevance of hand-written communication in the digital age. The organisation has held several successful carnivals in cities like Allahabad, Chandigarh and New Delhi in collaboration with partners such as JK Paper and India Post.
