Iconic Howrah Bridge Transformed with ‘Alpana’ Art and LED Lights for Durga Puja

Introduction

The historic Howrah Bridge, an iconic structure that has graced Kolkata for over 80 years, has undergone a stunning transformation just in time for Durga Puja. A team of talented artists has painted the cantilever thoroughfare with traditional Bengal ‘alpana’ motifs, while vibrant LED lighting now illuminates the bridge after sunset. This remarkable makeover celebrates Bengal’s rich cultural heritage and innovation, combining tradition and technology in an artful display.

A Colourful Transformation for Durga Puja

As the festivities of Durga Puja approached, the Howrah Bridge, officially known as Rabindra Setu, received a vibrant makeover. A group of artists led by renowned artist Sanjay Paul, along with 40 students from various art colleges, set out to adorn the bridge with Bengal’s traditional ‘alpana’ motifs. These motifs, traditionally used to decorate rural Bengal’s floors and walls, now grace a section of the 2,313-foot-long bridge, creating a unique and culturally rich atmosphere.

Dynamic Lighting for Nighttime Spectacle

The makeover doesn’t end with the ‘alpana’ artwork. The Howrah Bridge is now brilliantly illuminated with static and interactive LED lighting that comes to life after the sun sets. This dynamic lighting arrangement adds to the bridge’s grandeur and enhances the festive ambience.

Collaboration between Croma and Port Trust

Croma, a Tata Enterprise, was pivotal in bringing this artistic transformation to life. In association with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust, the ‘alpana’ painting on the Howrah Bridge was unveiled. This collaboration has allowed for a unique fusion of tradition and innovation.

Artist’s Tireless Efforts

Artist Sanjay Paul and his team displayed remarkable dedication to complete this ambitious project in a short time. Working tirelessly from midnight to the early hours of the morning, they managed to create the ‘alpana’ art, covering the length of the bridge on both sides adjacent to the footpath.

Electronics in the Spotlight

The ‘alpana’ motifs aren’t just traditional patterns; they symbolise the significance of electronics in people’s lives. The artwork includes motifs inspired by electronic gadgets, emphasising the role of technology in modern society. This creative fusion of tradition and innovation captures the essence of the auspicious Durga Puja festival in the city.

Circular Designs at Entry and Exit Points

Two large circular designs, each measuring 36 feet, have been prominently painted at the entry and exit points of the bridge, adding a captivating touch to the transformation.

Academic Collaboration

Anwesak Dawn, responsible for the fieldwork, enlisted the help of meritorious students from the Government Art College and the Garia Art College, ensuring the project was executed with precision and skill.

Conclusion

The Howrah Bridge’s ‘alpana’ makeover and dynamic LED lighting represent a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. This remarkable transformation not only pays homage to Bengal’s rich cultural heritage but also serves as a fascinating prelude to the forthcoming Durga Puja festivities. The iconic bridge has now become a canvas for artistic expression, showcasing the essence of Bengal’s biggest festival and the role of electronics in contemporary society.
