Climate change protesters vandalize Edgar Degas’ “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Two protesters dressed in black suits vandalized the display case protecting Edgar Degas’ sculpture “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The small wax statue created in 1880 had red and black paint smeared on its plexiglass display case. The two protesters were detained by security guards and are currently under police custody. The incident was caught on video, with the protesters calling for leaders to take serious action on climate change. The sculpture has been taken off the display so experts can assess potential damage, and the museum has unequivocally denounced the behaviour. The incident is the latest in a series of climate change demonstrations that have involved vandalizing fine art. Read more on Artnet.
Norway’s National Museum head, Karin Hindsbo, appointed as the new director of Tate Modern in London
Karin Hindsbo, currently the head of Norway’s National Museum, has been appointed as the new director of Tate Modern in London, succeeding Frances Morris who is stepping down. Hindsbo, who oversaw the consolidation of four Norwegian art institutions into the National Museum in Oslo, will begin her new role in September. She has also previously worked as director of several art institutions and museums in Norway and Denmark and was editor-in-chief of the Danish cultural journal Øjeblikket. The National Museum in Oslo, which was created from the former National Gallery, Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Architecture, and the country’s national touring exhibitions, is now the largest museum in the Nordic countries. Hindsbo called Tate Modern a “groundbreaking institution” and expressed eagerness to continue the museum’s work of creating a “unique and inspiring museum for a wide and diverse audience.” Read more on The Guardian.
Union Culture Ministry to release comic book series and art exhibition to honour 100th episode of Indian PM Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat”
The Union Culture Ministry is set to release a 12-part comic book series in order to hour the 100th episode of Indian PM Modi’s radio broadcast titled, “Mann Ki Baat” on the 30th of April. It is being initiated by Amar Chitra Katha and will additionally release translations of the comic in 12 other Indian languages. The culture ministry will showcase 13 ASI monuments from 29th April onwards to honour the historic and regional diversity of India. NGMA will also showcase a special art exhibition named, “Jana Shakti” which features 12 infamous artists. Read more on the matter in the Times of India.
