Rajashree Dutta Choudhury Explores Socio-Psychological Landscapes in Her Artwork

Rajashree Dutta Choudhury, an eminent educator, visual artist, writer, and researcher from Silchar, Assam, India, epitomises the confluence of academic rigour and creative prowess. Holding a Master and Bachelor of Visual Arts in Painting from Assam University, Silchar, she is currently advancing her scholarly pursuits with a PhD at the same institution. Rajashree’s artistic and intellectual odyssey is marked by her engagement with Contemporary Art, Art & Cultural Studies, alongside a deep-seated appreciation for the traditional and performing arts of India and the wider world.

Her artistic narrative is significantly enriched by her association with the Santiniketan Society of Visual Art & Design (SSVAD) under the mentorship of Jogen Chowdhury. This collaboration has allowed her to share her creative journey with luminaries like K G Subramanyan, Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Caur, Himmat Shah, K S Radhakrishnan, Manu Parekh, Madhvi Parekh, and Sunil Das, embedding her work within a rich tapestry of Indian contemporary art.

Since childhood, Rajashree has drawn inspiration from storybooks and animated forms, which have profoundly enhanced her creative and imaginative capabilities. She strives to portray her mental expressions and explore her visual experiences through her paintings, aiming to create a distinct artistic style. Natural elements and surroundings serve as the inspiration for her painterly expressions, showcasing a socio-psychological reflection of human behaviour and environmental atmospheres. Through her artworks, she seeks to reveal a specific attitude and reflect on the socio-political and psychological aspects of her surroundings.

Rajashree’s oeuvre is distinguished by her active participation in prestigious art exhibitions, residencies, workshops, and camps, including the India Art Fair 2022, Jehangir Art Gallery (2023), and The Bombay Art Society (2023). Her contributions extend to initiatives by Lalit Kala Akademi and the Ministry of Culture. Her artworks have not only been showcased internationally but have also contributed to the pages of prominent art publications such as Art&Deal, solidifying her presence in the art world.

Rajashree is a scholar who has given many papers at seminars and conferences. Her artwork is held in prestigious academic institutions and art centres throughout the world. She has been invited to serve as an external examiner for university-level practical exams and is a well-respected member of numerous art societies. She has also acted as a jury member for a number of art contests. Rajashree is currently an Assistant Professor in the Graphic Era Hill University, Dehradun’s Department of Fine Arts. She fosters the abilities of aspiring artists by combining her theoretical knowledge with her practical competence.
