Sakshi Art Gallery’s Significance

Located in the centre of Colaba, Mumbai’s art district, Sakshi Art Gallery is one of India’s premier galleries, spanning 3000sq ft. over two floors. It is the premier location for modern and contemporary art. The gallery makes extensive use of its available space. The artworks are displayed against stark white backgrounds aided by an effective lighting system. They have exhibited the works of maestros such as MF Hussain, KG Subramanyan, FN Souza, Nalini Malani, and Bhupen Khakhar.

Brief History of Sakshi Art Gallery Mumbai

Sakshi Art Gallery was founded in 1986 by Geeta Mehra. The gallery was founded in Chennai at first and later had locations in Bengaluru and Mumbai. In 1992, it moved to Colaba in Mumbai. In 2009, they opened a new location in Taipei, Taiwan, featuring the artwork of both foreign and Indian artists. To collaborate more closely with contemporary artists, the gallery opened Sakshi Salon in Khar, Mumbai, in 2015.

Sakshi Art Gallery has exhibited in myriad locations, including in Delhi, Baroda, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, New York, London, and Singapore. The gallery has also taken part in a number of international art fairs such as Art Basel and India Art Fair.

Sakshi Art Gallery Now

Since its formation by the Synergy Art Foundation, Sakshi Art Gallery has introduced many up-and-coming artists while collaborating closely with significant Indian and international artists. It has organized exhibitions of Indian art around the globe and presented notable international artists like El Anatsui, Gregory Crewdson, and Julian Opie to the Indian public. Notable Indian artists represented by the gallery include Rekha Rodwittiya, Surendran Nair, Jehangir Sabavala, Manjit Bawa, and Manjunath Kamath, among others.

Sakshi Art Gallery Mumbai provides a variety of services, such as a section dedicated to art advice, a library of art loans for corporate entities, and scholarship support for students and emerging artists.
