Introduction
A recent addition to Hyderabad’s lively Jubilee Hills neighbourhood, Telugu Medium is a tribute to the region’s rich architectural legacy. Using traditional building materials and methods, the restaurant pays tribute to the local vernacular architecture while providing a modern eating experience. It was designed by the local firm Sona Reddy Studio.
Embracing Tradition in Design
The architectural language of Telugu Medium is steeped in tradition, with a focus on celebrating the essence of South Indian architecture. The structure is characterized by massive brick domes, vaults, and exposed load-bearing walls, minimizing the use of concrete and steel. This thoughtful approach not only honours the region’s heritage but also caters to Hyderabad’s arid climate, creating a passively cooler interior environment.
Atrium: A Moment of Tranquility
At the heart of Telugu Medium lies a double-height, skylit atrium, adorned with a small pool and lush greenery. This serene space serves as a focal point, inviting guests to pause and immerse themselves in the intricacies of the design. Crafted brick domes and vaults adorn the ceiling, interacting with silhouette lighting to create an ever-changing atmospheric ambience.
Interiors: Harmony of Elements
Inside, the interiors echo the warmth of the exteriors, with pale pink lime-washed walls and Tandoori stone floors. Minimalistic dark wood furniture adds a timeless elegance, complementing the overall design ethos of simplicity and evocation.
Seamless Integration with Nature
Outside, the restaurant seamlessly blends with its surroundings, with a brick-paved terrace providing a waiting area and outdoor seating. Concrete benches incorporating planters offer a place to relax, while curved brick fins and concrete planters enliven the textured brick walls. Sprawling canopies provide shelter, creating an interplay between the built environment and nature.
Conclusion
Telugu Medium stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional architecture in contemporary settings. Through its thoughtful design and use of local materials, the restaurant not only pays homage to South Indian heritage but also offers a unique culinary experience in the heart of Hyderabad. With its fusion of tradition and modernity, Telugu Medium exemplifies the essence of South Indian architecture, inviting guests to embark on a journey of sensory delight.
