The Banality of Jeff Koons: His Artistic Milestones in 10 pictures.

Inspired by the likes of Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, the discourse around art by Jeff Koons is surely a disputed topic among art critics and the general public. On one hand, his sculptures are said to be a statement on the consumerism in art. He ironically presents the most popular cultural icons – like the Pink Panther or Popeye – in the form of figurines and gigantic structures, and the art enthusiasts dissect its themes and buy them for extended amount of money. On the other hand, it is critiqued that his art is a way to call out the snobbery of the art world, wherein even the most common people without a degree in art history, or any college education at all, are able to admire and understand his works of art. There also exists a sub-sect that calls out the artist for objectifying women in his sculptures. Either way, the artist has clearly marked a name for himself by working with the likes of Lady Gaga and BMW.

Koons’s art style is mostly aligned with the Pop Art movement. His recurring subjects include pop culture icons like famous cartoon characters, readymade objects, a love for inflatables and shiny surfaced sculptures. We, at Abir Pothi have made a collection of pictures of artwork by Jeff Koons that would help you recognize his journey as an artist.
