Each piece of art and architecture is unique. But why is that? This is because they are influenced by the political climate, the cultural identity, and the resources available. The same goes for miniature paintings. There are several schools such as Iranian miniature paintings, Kangra miniature paintings, and Mughal miniature paintings. Mughal Miniature Paintings are a distinctive art form that flourished in the Indian subcontinent during the Mughal Empire (1526-1857).
The miniature paintings of the Mughal period blend Persian, Indian, and Central Asian styles. They are known for their small size, vivid colours, and ultra-fine details. At the time, Mughal miniature paintings were commissioned primarily by Mughal emperors and their courtiers. They mostly depict scenes from court life, religious themes, flora and fauna, and historical events (even Jesus). A variety of ingredients go into making beautiful Mughal miniature paintings. They are sometimes made in watercolours and even gold leaves, creating a vibrant and visually stunning composition.
