This teen digital artist, Laya Mathikshara, has emerged as a shining star in the world of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), showcasing her talent and entrepreneurial spirit at the young age of 13. As the COVID-19 pandemic forced people to seek new hobbies and outlets for their creativity, Laya’s passion for digital art became her ticket to success, leading her to earn over one million dollars in just two years.

Laya’s journey began with a love for art and a desire to explore different mediums. She turned to YouTube tutorials to learn 3D art and animation, honing her skills and expanding her knowledge. It was during this time that she stumbled upon the world of NFTs, which opened up new possibilities for monetising her digital artwork. Intrigued by the potential, Laya delved deeper, conducting research and educating herself about the intricacies of the NFT market.

Speaking to DT Next, Laya expressed her excitement about the newfound opportunities presented by NFTs. She said, “It was a revelation to discover the potential of minting my digital art as NFTs. I started reading more about it.” Laya’s enthusiasm for the medium propelled her to create unique and captivating digital artworks that resonated with collectors and enthusiasts alike.

While financial success was an inevitable outcome of her talent and dedication, Laya’s journey was not solely driven by monetary gains. She found avenues to give back and support causes close to her heart through her art. One notable collaboration was with SpaceX’s Inspiration 4 launch, where she auctioned her artwork and donated over $3,000 to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital for cancer research. Additionally, Laya actively participated in initiatives supporting women-led projects, including designing NFTs for cooperatives such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and engaging with World of Women (WoW).

At the age of 15, Laya emphasises the importance of embracing the ever-evolving landscape of art and technology. She recognises that both digital mediums and traditional forms have their place in the art world, and there is ample room for all artists to thrive. “The evolution of technology brings forth new opportunities and advancements, urging artists to adapt and stay attuned to the ever-changing landscape. To thrive in this dynamic environment, embracing change and going with the flow is crucial,” Laya asserts.

Recently, Laya participated in Chennai’s first-ever Web3 event, Namma Web3, organised by the Namma Tribe and Colours of India. The event aimed to showcase the technology of the future through entertainment and provided Laya with a platform to demonstrate her artistic prowess to a wider audience.
