Suneet Chopra: The Art Critic and Curator Guiding Artists through Meticulous Editing and Wisdom

Smriti Malhotra

In the interconnected universe of art, Suneet Chopra’s approach to curation was one of meticulous editing, according to artist Saba Hasan. Chopra would begin every discussion on selecting works for exhibition with the mantra of “edit, edit, edit.” He believed that artists themselves were the best curators, emphasising the importance of stepping back from the love of the artistic process and taking a thoughtful look at their work. By reducing a series to its bare minimum, artists could capture the essence of their vision, with the first and last works representing the seminal journey from past to future. However, Chopra advised artists not to rush to share their creations prematurely.

Hasan fondly recalls Chopra’s gentle admonishments and suggestions filled with wisdom and deep knowledge of art. Amidst the vibrant art scene, there were chai addas (tea gatherings) in Triveni, filled with laughter, discussions, and speculations. Artists flocked around Chopra, seeking his insights on young artists, while gallerists looked to him for guidance. Journalists sought his quotes, appreciating his profound understanding of the art world. Chopra was not only a critic but also a generous connector, introducing like-minded individuals to one another. Through him, Hasan had the privilege of meeting renowned artists such as Ambadas, Arpana Caur, sculptor Latika Katt, and the iconic Ebrahim Alkazi.

Memories of Suneet Chopra transport Hasan back to the foundational years of the Students Federation of India on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, where Chopra would visit and meet her father. This connection speaks to Chopra’s multifaceted involvement in the art community, extending beyond the realm of criticism.

Chopra’s legacy as an art critic is one of guidance, introspection, and generosity. His emphasis on thoughtful curation and the importance of connecting artists, gallerists, and enthusiasts reveals his passion for nurturing the art world. Artists who had the privilege of crossing paths with him remember his wise counsel and cherish the memories of shared moments filled with creativity and camaraderie.

In the art world, Suneet Chopra’s contributions continue to resonate, leaving an indelible mark on artists, critics, and the vibrant tapestry of artistic expression.
