Mona Lisa from India

Imagine Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci as an Indian!

The most famous and recognisable paintings in the world draped with a saree, a red bindi, bangles in her wrist and may be some jewellery. The name must also have been different than Mona Lisa.

Over the years, people have used Mona Lisa in their artwork or have shared their own take on the Italian noblewoman. Recently, Resha Weaves a fabric company that deals with natural fibre products, in their creative online campaign on Instagram presented Mona Lisa in different regional sarees while also giving her local names. The backdrop also has been changed according to the locality Mona Lisa belongs to.

The first post, titled ‘Mona in Six Yards Across India’ showed the Mona Lisa dressed in what appears to be a lavish Murshidabad silk saree along with accessories and a big red bindi, a typical Hindu Bengali bride. Here Mona Lisa has become ‘Shona Lisa’.

Later on the trend followed as Mona Lisa was dubbed to ‘Maharani Lisa’ from Rajasthan, ‘Lisa Mol’ from Kerala and ‘Lisa Tai’ from Maharashtra. ‘Lisa Tai’ was decked in a Paithani saree and a nose ring whereas ‘Lisa Mausi’ from South Delhi was seen in her posh glory with sunglasses, a handbag and an iPhone. Some other versions of Indian Mona Lisa in the online campaign includes ‘Lisa Devi’ from Bihar with a big red bindi, ‘Lisa Ben’ from Gujarat wearing bangles and silver jewellery and ‘Lisa Bomma’ from Telangana.
