Disbanded Arts Committee to be reinstated by Biden

\"\"

President Joe Biden reinstates the President\’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. The advisory group of cultural experts resigned in response to Donald Trump\’s Charlottesville response. The group\’s members condemned Trump\’s response to the white nationalist Unite the Right rally that took place in Virginia. The board will advise Biden on initiatives related to the arts, humanities and museums. The committee was established in 1982 during the Reagan administration to advise the president on cultural matters. The Biden administration has largely embraced giving more government support to the arts, a sharp contrast to his predecessor. In 2021, Biden proposed a 20 percent increase to the NEA’s budget, the biggest rise in over a decade, bringing it to $201 million for the fiscal year 2022. For more details read ART News.

Vandalism fears Cézanne\’s famous nude scene

\"\"

The star of Tate Modern\’s Cézanne exhibition (5 October-12 March 2023) will be a painting that had to be safeguarded in a high-security frame due to vandalism fears. The Bathers (Les Grandes Baigneuses) was purchased for £475,000 by London\’s National Gallery in 1964, sparking outrage over such a high price for a work of \”contemporary\” French art. Taking inflation into account, that equates to roughly £7 million today. During the day, there were guards on each side of the picture, and at night, there was a dog patrol. The Bathers is one of Cézanne\’s largest paintings of one of his favourite subjects, coming from late in his career. This was then the largest cash donation ever to the National Gallery by a private individual or corporation. The Bathers by Paul Cézanne will be the main attraction in Tate\’s After Impressionism exhibition at the National Gallery in London (25 March-13 August 2023). Its value today would be well over £100m, and it is being loaned to Tate as part of a multi-million pound deal. Details at The Art Newspaper.

Artist asking to remove an art

Georg Baselitz has called for the removal of a painting by Adolf Ziegler from a Munich museum\’s permanent collection. He claims that the painting, Four Elements, has ties to the Nazi regime. The Pinakothek der Moderne is displaying the painting as part of its permanent collection. Museum leaders say they are open to \”critical reactions and discussions\” about Nazi-era art. Adolf Ziegler’s painting features a group of naked women posed as allegories for the natural elements. It is on view as part of the state-run museum’s exhibition “Mix and Match” alongside other works from its permanent collection. The painting appeared in a 1937 Munich show called “The Great German Art Exhibition.” In 2014, in New York, Four Elements was showcased at the Neue Galerie exhibit “Degenerate Art: The Attack on Modern Art in Nazi Germany, 1937.”For more details read ART News.
