Meet the Couple Who Designed Our World

We must think about the design when sitting in a chair or using something to move, operate, and articulate. Everything, including the ‘ourself’, is designed; without the design aspects, there is nothing. We are living in a designed world. However, where does this designed world start in a modern sense? How does the Jorn Utzon Opera House design inspire and change the architectural design we know?

Opera House design is considered the most pleasing illustration of human creativity, a building listed as a masterpiece in design and construction, one of the most remarkable buildings of the 20th century, and become the identity of a nation. One structure is many for the country and people. Assume that the Danish architect Jorn Utzon’s poetic approach to architectural beauty is edified as a structure. 

The design concept is fascinating and complex when we look into our surrounding space. Our world is beautiful and intriguing in a design sense at the same time, and many things seem the contrary of this design aspect. This furniture design is most important because these materials manage our living space; American-based designers Charles and Ray Eames bring the idea of minimalistic furniture design, and they are the people who give groundbreaking contributions in the field of architecture and furniture design. Architecture always brings the idea of furniture design, and the design aspects are part of architecture as a whole. 

Going into (the) practice of architecture in 1930 is something. Moreover, it is the greatest thing that could happen because you practice architecture and have to do everything. Moreover, we did some little churches, houses and residences, and if there was a sculpture to do, you carved the sculpture. If there was a mural to paint, you painted the mural. We designed vestments, lighting fixtures, residences, rugs, and carvings, said Charles, quoted in Naomi Stungo’s Charles And Ray Eames (2000).

 After graduation in architecture, Charles moved to Michigan, where he aspected the invitation of was greatly influenced by Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and became an instructor and head of the industrial design department. Charles won the New York Museum of Modern Art “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition. This project changed Charles’s life and design history forever. This project brings him his life partner and long-time collaborator, Ray Kaiser in his life. They, together, designed plywood products that influenced the world of design and products. 

The case study about home design has changed Charles and Ray’s perspective. Aftermaths of World war’s world started to think differently; Arts and Architecture magazine’s team started over economically priced modern homes that used wartime and industrial materials. This practice of case study and designing a house changed the lives of Charles and Ray couples, who were aware of the furniture in the home. They lived there to acclimate to the locations and build a home. Now that home is a milestone of modern architecture history. 

“I think of myself officially as an architect; I look at the problems around us as problems of structure. Our tools are often connected with the arts, but we use them to solve particular problems. I think of architects as tradesmen–and it does not seem an unflattering idea. Anyone who calls himself an artist is suspect to me because an artist is a title you earn; you don’t gain it by choosing a line of work, said Charles Eames in his lecture on architecture and design. 

In his classic note about the chair, ‘In our chairs, we have not attempted to solve the problem of how people should sit. Instead, we accepted how people sit and operate within that framework, said Charles Eames. The philosophy of Charles evolved in the time and space of the World War period. 

Charles Eames is a designer and architect that changed the world profoundly. Charles is best known for his designs, and he is an artist who is fond of many artists like Miro, Piccaso, and Gabo. Charles’s designs came from different sources and met at one single point.
