On October 3, 2023, New Delhi’s ‘Drawing Life,’ a mesmerising exhibition that honours the ongoing allure of Warli Art, is being presented by Ojas Art, a well-known name in the art world. An extraordinary collection of about 20 works of art is on display in this exceptional exhibition, highlighting the flawless fusion of native heritage and modern influences. The brainchild of Anubhav Nath, Director of Ojas Art, and curated by the artist, curator, and educator, Nikhil Purohit, ‘Drawing Life’ transcends cultural boundaries by spotlighting the profound coexistence of Warli art in both its traditional form and contemporary adaptations.
Warli Art: A Time-Honored Tradition
The Warli tribe, which dates its beginnings to 2500 BC, uses elaborate wall murals to convey its historical past. These murals have historically commemorated weddings, ceremonies, and happy occasions. They are generally created using simple materials like soil, cow dung, and rice paste. Jivya Soma Mashe was instrumental in transforming Warli art from walls to canvases in the 1970s, making it one of India’s most beloved and recognisable art forms that is praised for its emotional resonance and simplicity.
The ‘Drawing Life’ Collection
A magnificent selection of pieces, some with imposing dimensions of up to 5 feet by 8 feet, are on display at the “Drawing Life” exhibition. These fascinating works are evidence of the artist’s mastery of Warli art, which is renowned for its rhythmic, simple forms that perfectly capture the complexities of life.
Meet the Artists
The exhibition features work by a talented roster of artists: Balu Jivya Mashe, Mayur & Tushar Vayeda, Rajesh Chaitya Vangad, Ramesh Laxman Hengadi, Sadashiv Mashe, and Shantaram Gorkhana.
“In 2019, we hosted our first major Warli Art exhibition and learned a lot over the next few years. Among the indigenous arts, on first look Warli seems plodding with essentially a brown base and white imagery. It takes a little bit of time to understand and appreciate Warli, and it emerges as the most simplistic, to-the-point, and lightest art form,” said Anubhav Nath, Curatorial Director of Ojas Art.

The exhibition is open until Sunday, October 15, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ojas Art@1AQ, located near the iconic Qutub Minar in Mehrauli, Delhi.
