Paper Alchemy by Great Banyan Art Opens at Bikaner House Soon!

Great Banyan Art is set to present a remarkable exhibition, Paper Alchemy: Tracing Memories Through Time, which will be held at Bikaner House, New Delhi, from April 26 to 30, 2025. For the first time ever, the gallery will showcase its exclusive collection of over 100 rare works on paper, spanning from the 18th century to the present day. This exhibition delves deep into how artists across generations have harnessed the fragility and resilience of paper, using it not only as a medium but also as a powerful vehicle for memory, expression, and historical dialogue.

The exhibition will be delving into the evolution of paper as a medium of artistic expression in India, exploring its duality as a fragile yet resilient material. Paper Alchemy traces how artists have harnessed paper to convey powerful narratives, preserve memory, and experiment with new techniques across generations. Featuring works by some of India’s most renowned artists, including M. F. Husain, F. N. Souza, Atul Dodiya, and contemporary talents like Jagannath Panda and Rameshwar Broota, the show examines how paper has served as a tool for reimagining artistic possibilities within the changing cultural, political, and social contexts of India.

The exhibition may include a fascinating selection of works by international artists such as Thomas and William Daniell, James Prinsep, and William Hodges, highlighting the cross-cultural exchange between Indian and European artistic traditions. The display spans a range of artistic techniques, from watercolour, gouache, and tempera to lithography, etching, aquatint, and serigraphy, showcasing the versatility of paper as a canvas for both traditional and modern art.

Through Paper Alchemy, the exhibition celebrates how paper, despite its delicate nature, has endured as a vital medium for preserving stories, emotions, and ideas across centuries, capturing the ever-changing landscape of Indian art history.
