A Bird Call Northeast India Exhibition 2025

An exhibition by artist, educator and conservationist Rupa Samaria, ‘A Bird Call, Northeast India’ highlights the beauty and diversity of avian species in the northeast, while gently turning people’s attention towards their preservation. 

The northeastern states of India rival some of the most magnificent landscapes in the world. From lush forests to expansive wetlands and undulating hills, the diversity in terrain is fascinating.

Northeast India Bird Species Art

The dizzying variety of birds in the region is a testament to nature’s grandeur. From the elusive flowerpeckers to the majestic tragopans, the avifauna of the.  northeast–including rare and endangered species–reveals stories of ecological richness.

True to Samaria’s style, the exhibition ‘A Bird Call, Northeast India’ brings to life these wings of wonder through her intricate brushstrokes and immersive storytelling.

Rupa Samaria Bird Paintings at IHC

From February 25 to March 4, 2025, at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, Samaria’s collection of over 150 artworks conveys the magnificence and fragility of birds–urging viewers, of all generations, to pause, observe and protect. 

“Through this exhibition, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of the crucial role birds play in maintaining ecological harmony, while also showcasing the beauty of rare and essential birds from the region, encouraging viewers to visit and experience its beauty,” says Samaria.

As a young girl, Samaria’s travels to Darjeeling where the flora and fauna once seamlessly co-existed left a lasting impression on her mind. 

Her creations across various mediums like watercolours, acrylic, charcoal, and even sculpture and interactive art, bring alive her soft spot for the region–weaving tales that are poignant and impactful. 

“Each piece in A Bird Call, Northeast India is a reminder, a revelation, and a responsibility–a call to celebrate, understand, and safeguard the avian heritage of this rich and fragile ecosystem,” says Samaria.

About the Artist

Delhi-based Rupa Samaria was born and brought up in Patna. Her art has always borne the imprint of her penchant for birds and wildlife conservation. Her work conveys both the magnificence and fragility of birds in equal measure through diverse mediums such as watercolours, acrylic, and charcoal. Her ongoing series of avian artwork revolves around owls, sparrows, kingfishers and birds native to various Indian states. She works on her paintings after detailed and careful research. Her paintings tell a story and offer educational value on the subject. Her artwork is conceptual. She hopes to create interest and awareness in society to protect the precious bird species.
