A Dot and A Line: A Workshop by Kiran Nadar Museum of Art

Tsuktiben Jamir

Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) was recently in the news for unveiling the prototype for their new building at an exhibition in Delhi and later in Venice. KNMA is back with an array of exciting events lined up for art lovers in and around Delhi. One such event is the ‘A Dot and A Line’ workshop that is set to be held on the 28th of May 2023 from 4:00 PM- 7:00 PM. It will be open to all individuals above 15 years of age. The workshop is organised under the #WeekendsAtKNMA initiative through which the museum hopes to magnify its exposure and attract new, diverse audiences.

The theme of the workshop is self-explanatory in that, it will focus on lines as a creative process of producing art. A line is a discernible route that a moving point in space makes; it can be straight, curved, or a mix of the two. What we often consider to be a line has an infinite diversity. It has only one dimension and may change in length, breadth, and direction, and they may be literal or implied. A line has distinct qualities no matter how it is drawn or represented. The possibilities of using lines to create art will be explored through the workshop.

Led by minimalist artist Cheetna, it is a workshop where people can express nothing more than the logic of their own invention, and despite these strict compositional restrictions, “an infinite number of very different developments can be evolved according to individual inclination and temperament.”

Cheetna, who earned her Master’s in Painting from the College of Art in New Delhi, seems like the perfect guide for the workshop. She mostly draws inspiration for her geometric abstractions from the scenery and architecture of her city, turning astute observations of the environment into an elegant diagram of lines and markers. Chetnaa’s work, which began as symmetrical groupings, illustrates the necessity of dismantling the order she originally sought in order to create a new geometric logic that supports her minimalist style.

Paytm Insider described the workshop as: “This is a workshop with straight, vertical, horizontal, diagonal lines. Lines that you encounter around you, that surround you, that follow you everywhere, that are there because of you. The participants will go deeper in understanding and exploring the various facets and possibilities that can be offered by a simple dot moving in space, leaving behind its traces in the form of a Line.”

According to KNMA, the workshop will be an inquisitive and exploratory experience; “Join us in exploring the limitless world of lines – in all their glory, direction, and possibilities. With this workshop, we will learn to craft a unique narrative using straight, vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. Drawing inspiration from the lines that surround us, delve deeper into understanding and exploring the various facets and possibilities that a simple dot moving in space can offer, leaving behind its traces in the form of a line.”
