A Hong Kong edition of Shanghai Art021 will debut, targeting galleries in the Global South.

Introduction

After months of speculation, Art021, a prominent art fair operator based in Shanghai, has officially announced the launch of its inaugural Hong Kong fair, scheduled tentatively for July 2024. Named Art021 Hong Kong, the event is set to be an invitation-only affair, with participating galleries handpicked by the organizers.

Focused on Art from the Global South

Art021 Hong Kong aims to carve out its niche in the city’s bustling art scene by spotlighting galleries from mainland China, the Middle East, and other regions of the Global South, including India, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, and Pakistan. David Chau, co-founder of Art021, emphasises the importance of bridging cultural gaps and bringing exposure to artists from these regions to international collectors.

Chau notes, “While Western artists are well received in China, the reception of Chinese artists in Western markets has been less enthusiastic. Our goal is to showcase exceptional art from not only China but also the wider Global South, including the Chinese diaspora.”

Support from Hong Kong Government and Future Prospects

With direct financial support from the Hong Kong government’s Mega Arts and Cultural Events Fund, Art021 Hong Kong aims to establish itself as a long-term player in the city’s art scene. Chau underscores the commitment to the fair’s longevity, despite concerns surrounding the implementation of Hong Kong’s national security law.

Acknowledging the packed art fair calendar and its potential strain on exhibitors and collectors alike, Chau believes Hong Kong’s robust art market can sustain another fair, particularly in the second half of the year.

Addressing Concerns and Expanding Partnerships

Amidst growing anxiety over the impact of Hong Kong’s national security law on the cultural sector, Art021 assures that the city’s art scene remains less restricted compared to mainland China. Exhibitors have the autonomy to decide what they showcase without government censorship.

In addition to featuring curated sections exploring themes related to the Global South, Art021 is exploring potential partnerships, including one with Art Dubai, to bring more galleries from the Middle East to Hong Kong.

Launching Amidst a Changing Landscape

Art021’s foray into the Hong Kong market coincides with a shifting global art landscape and the emergence of new regional fairs. Despite a downturn in the global art market, the debut of boutique fairs like Supper Club in Hong Kong and 1-54’s expansion plans indicate continued interest in the region.

The launch of Art021 Hong Kong during the city’s hottest season is attributed to venue availability, with plans to hold subsequent editions during cooler months.

Conclusion

As Art021 ventures into the vibrant art scene of Hong Kong, it seeks to provide a platform for diverse voices from the Global South while navigating challenges and seizing opportunities in the ever-evolving art market landscape. With its inaugural edition slated for summer 2024, Art021 Hong Kong aims to make a lasting impression on collectors, exhibitors, and enthusiasts alike.
