Celebrating Earth Month at Bespoke Art Gallery
Opening in India’s design capital, the show coincides with Earth Day (22nd April 2025), bringing together materials, mediums, and the beauty of the earth in dynamic ways in a curation that reflects the wonder of man and nature and the interdependence of the two. Speaking on the concept, curator Uma Nair says:
Purusha Prakriti is a universal credo of love for the rhythms of the earth. These artists unconsciously celebrate the threads of harmony within their own practice. While it may be the gods and goddesses, it could be animals and birds, it could be even the lexicon of a language. Each accent is varied but distinct. There is also a grouping of artists from Gujarat who are all practitioners in their own accord. This show is more about practicing artists who bring tradition forward to contemporary character. In the legion of sculptures, installations, ceramics, printmaking, and painting, we are looking at the beauty of love for the simplicity of time and its many inspirations that can be found all around us. The dedication to Himmat Shah raises a toast to his genius and the fact that he was born in Lothal in Gujarat.
A Dynamic Exhibition with Leading Artists Curated by Uma Nair
The exhibition pays homage to modernist sculptor Himmat Shah, leading with his iconic head from the London series. Sculptural works by Dhananjay Singh, Karl Antao, Ankit Patel, Debashish Bera, and international names Jesús Curia, Simon Max Bannister, and Gillie & Marc contribute to a dynamic discourse on form and texture. Highlights include Ram Kumar Manna’s terracotta Ganeshas, Arun Pandit’s Thinkers, and Arunkumar HG’s recycled elephant.

The exhibition also includes a centenary celebration of KG Subramanyan through his prints and drawings, and features esteemed printmakers like Rini Dhumal, former Professor, MS University Vadodara, printmaker Jyoti Bhatt, and Subrat Kumar Behera, whose acclaimed work on Gandhi was created for Lalit Kala Akademi’s centennial tribute in 2019.

An outstanding ceramic section features leading names like Keshari Nandan Kumar (the piece juxtaposes Nandlal Bose’s Gandhi on a stoneware platter), Vipul Kumar, Vineet Kacker, Leena Batra, Shampa Shah, and Saraswati of Auroville.
Among installations are Ankon Mitra’s origami butterflies and Harsha Durugadda’s award-winning Topo, winner of the Celeste Prize 2017.

The paintings section is led by Thota Vaikuntam and Arpitha Reddy from Andhra Pradesh, along with Rini Dhumal’s Devi. Muzaffar Ali’s pair of calligraphic wonders speaks of equivocal echoes in the lexicon of language. Also featured are Sudip Roy’s Benares, Bhajju Shyam’s trees, Neelesh Vede’s stellar canvas, and Poonam Bhatnagar’s riveting Meerabai. A younger name amongst women artists is Chaitali Chanda from Kolkata. Patul Dash presents The Lost Prince II, a painting of an elephant in a landscape of flowers. Phaneendra Nath Chaturvedi’s painting with butterfly wings is created in a modernist mood.

In drawing, viewers will find Sanjay Bhattacharyya’s Durga, M Narayan’s Ganesha, and stirring works by Bhajju Shyam and Phaneendra Nath Chaturvedi.
The Indian art market has a widespread number of artists from different disciplines, and Bespoke seeks to create awareness and appreciation of Indian artists across different geographies. We want to bring forward greater interest in Indian art, which I believe must go beyond a niche audience. The goal of Bespoke Art Gallery is to add to the expansion of the Indian market and create awareness nationally as well as internationally. Earth Month is about man’s role on the planet, and we must join hands in its sustenance and conservation.
