Exhibition Overview

Himmat Shah, widely regarded as one of India’s most celebrated modernists, continues to push the boundaries of his artistic practice, even in his 90s. This exhibition provides an intimate look at his later works, offering a rare opportunity to witness the evolution of his creative expression. His recent drawings present a departure from reality, blending imagination and memory to create fresh perspectives on familiar forms such as portraits, animals, and still life. These works reflect Shah’s deep engagement with the power of line and brushstroke, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

A particular highlight of the exhibition is Shah’s recent bronze sculptures. These pieces demonstrate his enduring exploration of form and material, despite the physical challenges that come with age. The sculptures serve as a testament to Shah’s unwavering dedication to his craft, as he continues to experiment and create well into his 90s.

Curatorial Vision

The exhibition has been conceptualized with the guidance of Roobina Karode, Director and Chief Curator of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, who serves as a special advisor to the exhibition. Reflecting on Shah’s work, Karode notes, “What Himmat shares with us, the viewers, is the sheer power of a line or a brushstroke and its potential to elevate the mundane into a magical moment; immortalizing a creative human act.” Karode’s insights provide valuable context for the exhibition, highlighting the depth and breadth of Shah’s creative imagination.

Exhibition Design

The exhibition design has been carefully crafted by Prima Kurien, creating a space that allows for a contemplative and immersive experience. Each element of the design enhances the viewer’s interaction with Shah’s works, providing a setting that reflects the subtlety and strength of his art.
