Delhi turns into an art zone
Featuring 37 galleries, two museums and four art institutions, Delhi will be divided into four art zones this weekend, as part of the inaugural edition of Delhi Art Week (DAW). The new art collaboration hopes to bring public and private art institutions together to inject fresh energy into the Capital’s art scene, and will host nearly 50 exhibitions featuring 250 artists. Those keen on attending can check the related activities on the dedicated portal, Delhiartweek.com, which will feature an interactive map of the zones and a downloadable schedule. Mint Lounge lays out the plan.
When art breaks through autism’s stigma
An online platform created by advocacy group Autypical now showcases art from autistic children and young adults across India. The managing director of the unique enterprise was inspired by her son, an autistic young artist himself. The group informs that India doesn’t have proper statistical data on autism as diagnosis rates are low, thanks to lack of awareness, notions of stigma, and superstition. The aim of this initiative is not just to create awareness about capabilities of autistic persons, but also to give them a platform to showcase their work. News Laundry explores the project.
Now, world’s most expensive painting turns NFT
An NFT (non-fungible token) has been created of Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci, which sold for $450m at Christie’s New York in November 2017. The controversial artwork shows Christ with his right hand raised in blessing — and his other hand clutching a fistful of dollars. The NFT is to be auctioned over Easter weekend (UK), and the person behind the move is Ben Lewis, the author of the 2019 publication The Last Leonardo, who says his target price is $450m in Ethereum. The Art Newspaper has the details.
Bali’s artists struggle as tourism dips
With Bali’s borders closing to foreign tourists now, its unique and vibrant art scene is suffering immensely. Many artists in the once-thriving cultural centre are struggling with the new reality. In normal circumstances, tour guides also take travellers to galleries to see and buy works on display. Today, most guides have had to find other work or return to their villages. Gallery owners are also bereft, even as calls are being made to explore more sustainable tourism. Al Jazeera reports.
Did you know this celebrity is an artist?
Not too many people who love his absolutely stellar body of work in cinema know that Anthony Hopkins produces wildly acclaimed art amongst which pieces have also been described as surrealistic! And that’s not all. Lucy Liu works across various media, including ink drawings, paintings, silkscreens, collages, and sculptural works in wood, resin, and bronze. Pierce Brosnan on the other hand, produces bright and striking art works with oil and acrylic, while Jim Carrey draws a whole lot of anti-Trump art. Buzzfeed compiles an enjoyable listicle.
