Artist Sujata Bajaj Wins the Prestigious Maharashtrian of the Year Award 2022

Artist Sujata Bajaj has won the prestigious ‘Lokmat Maharashtrian of the Year Award 2022’ for her excellent contribution to the field of Art. The Awards honour individuals who, through their outstanding work, have changed the shape of Maharashtra and the whole country. The ceremony was held on the 11th of October 2022 at The Dome, NSCI in Mumbai.

Sujata Bajaj flew from Paris to attend the event and was seen wearing a stunning saree designed by her daughter. When we spoke to her, she expressed her joy at having received the award. She said, \”when your own people give you so much respect, it is an unmatchable experience. It is one thing when the world gives you respect but it is a completely different feeling when your own people appreciate you.\” She also said that she received a \”lot of love, care and affection and it was a beautiful experience.\”

For her, this experience is extremely close to her heart as she has a special link to Maharashtra. Her career started in Pune, her first show was in Pune and her whole childhood was spent in the state of Maharashtra. This made the award even more meaningful for her, it felt as if her life had come full circle.

Sujata Bajaj is one of India\’s most distinguished artists and her work has received critical acclaim around the world. Her works have been exhibited around the world in places like Norway, Paris, and Dubai. Born in Jaipur, Rajasthan she started picking up the paintbrush at the early age of six. She received a scholarship from the French government in 1988 to study at l\’Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. She is also the recipient Bombay Art Society Award (1991), Raza Foundation Award ( 2003) amongst others. She has worked and experimented with numerous mediums such as etching, wood-cut, sculpture, murals, cold ceramic, fibre-glass, metal, mixed media and acrylic. There is an influence of both French and Indian art in her work.
