Atlanta Art Fair: An Upcoming Celebration of Southern and Contemporary Art

Art Market Productions (AMP), the New York-based leader in art fairs, is heading to Atlanta next. The partnership with Intersect Art and Design will see the Atlanta Alt Fair Opening in 2022. It has been mentioned earlier in the high-profile events of Seattle, New York City, and San Francisco. This fascinating endeavor aligns with the city’s burgeoning art community, often highlighted by events like Atlanta Art Week and the lively Pullman Yards location. The Atlanta Art Fair is set to open in October 2024 with Kelly Freeman of AMP guiding their way. In September, a highly anticipated season opener event will take place the first weekend of Atlanta Art Week as part of the more widespread celebration of the city’s vibrant arts scene.

The Art Scene in Atlanta

Every neighborhood in Atlanta practically has a gallery or galleries to show for its thriving mosaic of art scenes. These include Deactur, Inman Park, Buckhead and the West End — threads of which collectively stitch together Atlanta’s rich artistic tapestry. Considering the number of artists working within this cradle of American Modernism, we will forever be indebted to them and their legacy — but, at least for those four days in October 2024, the Atlanta Art Fair will give collectors a one-stop shop. The fair will see Pullman Yards — a site typically used for immersive events such as Jurassic World and pop-up exhibitions — turned into an ad hoc sanctuary for galleries, museums, and nonprofits. It’s a chance to experience just how rich our city’s art culture can be, without ever leaving Midtown.

“[The success hold Atlanta Art Week] just shows what a difference the interest of one individual can make in transforming their region onto a national stage, said AMP director Kelly Freeman about Walker. What she also said was: ‘I do this for a living and have staff of 8 who can work full-time to achieve what she has. in an interview today with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Who all are participating?

Anna Walker Skillman returned to Atlanta more than a year ago and announced plans for the first Art Fair. Already 100 artists are confirmed to be representing over 60 exhibitors. Galleries such as Alan Avery Art Company, Day & Night Projects and Dunwoody Gallery will also represent Atlanta’s art scene. Participating for the first time will be House of Friends (Savannah, Georgia), and new to Texas this year are Scott Miller Projects (Birmingham, AIabama) and Fotovat Atelier (Fort Lauderdale, Florida). The fair will be rounded out by galleries from Los Angeles, Aspen, New York, Seoul, Bogotá, Turku, Ontario and Dublin to give an international bent.

Alliances with AMP

Having more than 30 cultural organizations, the Atlanta Art Fair has solidified itself as the focus of cultural life in the city. Additional stalwarts such as Art Papers, Dashboard Co-op, and the Millennium Gate Museum Atlanta will host dedicated booths in the hall, along with Lead Institutional Partner The High Museum of Art.

Curators on board with Art Market Productions (AMP)

The group exhibition will be co-curated by notable curator Nato Thompson, who previously curated an open air show in Atlanta for Flux Projects titled Dream and local guest curator Lauren Jackson Harris alongside Black Women in Visual Art co-founder Karen Comer Lowe. They will collectively define what the public programming of the Atlanta Art Fair will look like —a social media campaign and much more that will take place not just during, but outside fair dates. “Watching the enthusiasm for art in Atlanta expand, we knew that it was time to bring a sophisticated and relevant Art Fair to this city,” said Thompson. “CUAD is excited to be working with local voices that can authentically represent what the art scene in Atlanta is all about. Which is why working with curators rooted in Atlanta, who have historical knowledge of and relationships within the region is crucial.

Real Life: The Atlanta Art FairWho can we expect to see at the fair? “[This is an] inclusive space where you come and look at what’s happening in your city and your region rather than just one side of it,” Kelly Freeman said to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. As well as have real access to the people who are behind that shaping.
