Director of Moscow’s Pushkin state museum quits as Russia pressures cultural institutions
The director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, one of Russia’s largest museums, resigned Monday and will be replaced by the head of an architecture museum who once worked for Russia’s Internal Affairs Ministry. The director, Marina Loshak, insisted Tuesday that her resignation after a decade in the post was voluntary. But her departure is the latest example of turnover in the leadership of Russian cultural institutions amid wartime demands from the government that art exhibitions reflect patriotic, national values. Last month, the Russian government ousted the longtime director of Moscow’s Tretyakov Gallery, one of the world’s most famous art museums, just days after Russia’s Culture Ministry demanded that she prove that the museum’s prestigious collection was “in line with spiritual and moral values.” Details on the Art News.
Biden names 2 new national monuments in the Southwest
President Biden on Tuesday designated two new national monuments in the Southwest, insulating from development a half-million acres in Nevada that are revered by Native Americans and 6,600 acres in Texas that were once admired by the writer Jack Kerouac. In southern Nevada, Mr. Biden protected a large portion of the Spirit Mountain area, encompassing some of the most biologically diverse and culturally significant lands in the Mojave Desert. Near El Paso, Texas, he established the Castner Range National Monument on a former artillery range along rugged canyons and arroyos that rise out of the desert near the Franklin Mountains. Willem Dafoe’s movie ‘Inside’ portrays contemporary art on a new level
The new movie Inside, starring Willem Dafoe as an art thief, is both a psychological thriller and an art collector’s nightmare. For Italian curator Leonardo Bigazzi, it was also an unprecedented logistical challenge to stage the exhibition within the film. The movie may be entirely a work of fiction, but its portrayal of an art thief trapped inside a Pritzker-winning architect’s home incorporates real and replica works from some of the world’s most famous living artists far beyond standard set design. “At this scale, this has never been done before,” said Bigazzi, whose film and art career include work as curator of the Lo schermo dell’arte – Contemporary Art and Cinema Festival, curator at Fondazione In Between Art Film as well as commissioning and producing over 20 artist’s films.
