In a celebration of Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage and creative diversity, the Kashmir Art Emporium in Srinagar recently hosted a captivating two-day calligraphy exhibition under the banner of the ‘Know Your Artisan’ initiative. Organized by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, the event provided a platform for two master calligraphers, each with their distinctive style, to showcase their awe-inspiring works and enthralled visitors from all walks of life.

The first, 67-year-old Mohammad Shafi Mir from Baramulla district, specializes in the traditional on-paper calligraphy approach, creating intricate and mesmerising pieces. His classical finesse captivated the attention of art enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
The second artist, 40-year-old Shahnawaz Ahmad Sofi, hails from central Kashmir’s Srinagar district. Sofi has gained acclaim for his innovative fusion of calligraphy and carpet weaving, resulting in a unique blend that fascinated onlookers. The juxtaposition of Mir’s traditional approach and Sofi’s experimentation with mediums became the highlight of the exhibition, drawing admiration from all corners.
The event, which showcased the artistic heritage of Kashmir, was inaugurated by the Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Mehmood Ahmad Shah. He emphasized the significance of such exhibitions in promoting art and providing a platform for talented artists of the Union territory. Shah highlighted that such initiatives not only preserve rich art and culture but also help explore new markets for these traditional crafts, enabling their reach to new places.
The exhibition is a remark to Srinagar’s recognition in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for its dedication to preserving and promoting cultural heritage. By fostering a space for local artisans to showcase innovative art forms, the city continues to shine as a hub of creativity and craftsmanship.
Visitors expressed their enthusiasm for such initiatives that preserve traditional art forms while embracing new artistic expressions. Suhail Salim, one of the visitors, commended the efforts, stating, “These initiatives are welcoming and go a long way in not only preserving our rich art and culture but also giving talented artists the recognition they truly deserve.”
