Chief Minister Inaugurates Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery to Celebrate the Artist’s Legacy

Introduction

In a momentous occasion for art enthusiasts and history buffs, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery on the premises of the Napier Museum on Monday. This new addition to Kerala’s cultural landscape is not just a tribute to one of India’s foremost artists, but it also boasts the largest collection of Ravi Varma paintings in the country.

Honouring a Genius

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while inaugurating the gallery, eloquently described it as a tribute to the genius of Raja Ravi Varma. He emphasised the significance of opening the gallery during the 175th birth anniversary celebrations of the artist, which were being observed worldwide. Raja Ravi Varma‘s work seamlessly blended Indian traditions with Western techniques, heralding a renaissance in Indian art.

Recognising Ravi Varma’s Worth

Despite being celebrated internationally, the Chief Minister acknowledged that Kerala had yet to fully recognise the true worth of Ravi Varma. He stressed the importance of preserving and cherishing Ravi Varma’s works, which had been declared national treasures to prevent their removal from the country. The art gallery is now home to works transferred from the Kilimanoor Palace, and the state bears the responsibility of safeguarding them for posterity.

A Cultural Marvel: The Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery

Developed by the State Museums department at a cost of ₹7.90 crore, the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery is a cultural marvel housing 135 artworks. These include masterpieces by Ravi Varma himself, as well as contributions from his brother Rajaraja Varma, his sister Mangala Bayi, and other contemporary artists. The gallery not only celebrates Ravi Varma’s artistry but also the artistic milieu of his time.

The gallery’s opening symbolises a deep commitment to preserving Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.

Distinguished Presence

The inaugural ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister for Animal Husbandry J. Chinchurani, V.K. Prasanth, MLA, Mayor Arya Rajendran, Chief Secretary V. Venu, and other officials. Their presence underscored the importance of this cultural milestone in the state of Kerala.

The Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery promises to be a hub for art enthusiasts, historians, and anyone with an appreciation for the rich tapestry of Indian art and culture. It not only pays homage to the legendary artist but also serves as a reminder of the need to preserve and cherish our artistic heritage for generations to come.
