Depiction of soul in ‘Layers of Being’

Shruti Goyal’s works represent calmness and a pattern or layer of colours that co-relate with each other in such a way that it creates a whole new personal narrative. A new exhibition, “Layers of Being”, started on 19th September at India International Centre, where abstraction took the front seat. With the universal purpose of playing with colours, Shruti’s abstract paintings dive deep into the realm of calmness and a soothing experience for the eye to witness. Her work speaks about the balance and harmony in human life that keeps changing over time. Her work has serene sensitivity and plays a vital role in promoting the appeal of understanding the self. Her narratives become essential in her works; it feels like she painted her soul out.

The concept of “Layers of existence” surpasses our limited perception. This is an invitation to think about the strong feelings and experiences people usually don’t show. The narrative evolves as we incorporate additional layers onto the canvas, resembling how our lives grow more captivating with every encounter, decision, and emotion.

When asked about the process, Shruti responded, “My paintings are inspired by nature; what comes out is the colours from nature. Every colour represents a different mood, different time, and feeling. The painting process is not a predefined thing. The process continues to grow. I started with basic composition and colour theory in my mind and whatever the painting demands. Sometimes, my mood changes with time. I always have a predefined layout before I start painting, and what comes out is my soul. This series started during COVID-19; I love outdoor things and colour. This was based on my inner turmoil, so my paintings are based on time and my mood.”

Shruti responded with her connection with colour, “I like to experiment with different colours; it’s very organic, and there’s no specific choice of colours; I always go for different colours and compositions. Because I believe everything goes with everything, it’s how we balance things. It’s about the feeling that comes out. The painting is a layer of colours, and we humans are like that with several layers. Every work of mine is different from the previous one, just like the human experience. It’s a journey, how we progress. It’s a very natural and organic process. My depiction is a feeling of calmness and peace. Also, something to remember concerning time. People connect with my paintings, and I believe that it should be universal.”

Layers of Being encompasses more than just a collection of vivid artwork. It shows how our emotions shape our lives. The hidden narrative is unveiled through every brushstroke, tint, and colour variation. Various colours in the painting symbolize the different emotions and aspects of being human. Like how we experience other emotions, these colours evoke our deepest feelings. Deep blues bring the calm, peaceful feeling and intense emotions that fiery reds ignite. Light yellow gives off a cosy and happy feeling, while dark brown colours connect us to nature.
