Christie’s ‘Goodbye Peachtree Road’ Auction: Elton John’s Collection Shines, Surpasses Expectations

Since its opening on February 9th, Christie’s ‘Goodbye Peachtree Road’ auction has captured the attention of collectors and enthusiasts alike with a variety of gems from music great Elton John’s collection. Online bidding is open through February 28th, and this is a unique chance to own a piece of Elton John’s legendary heritage.

Auction Origins and Remarkable Holdings

Prompted in part by John’s recent sale of his six-bedroom Atlanta condominium, the auction showcases items that once adorned his beloved home. Originally purchasing a duplex in 1992, John later expanded into five additional apartments within the building, creating a space that housed an extensive art collection alongside his personal belongings.

With over 900 items featured in the auction series, highlights include artworks by renowned artists such as Banksy and Keith Haring. Banksy’s Flower Thrower Triptych (2017) stole the show, fetching an impressive $1.9 million, significantly surpassing its estimated value.

Artistic Gems and Unexpected Surprises

Among the standout pieces is Deborah Butterfield’s Dazzle (1990), a striking scrap metal horse sculpture that, despite underperforming in terms of estimates, holds sentimental value for Elton John. Describing it as a centrepiece of his apartment and a temporary addition to the Atlanta skyline, John’s connection to the artwork adds a layer of depth to its significance.

Items closely associated with the legendary musician attracted fervent bidding, with his 1990 Bentley Continental Convertible selling for an impressive $441,000, exceeding its high estimate by over ten times. Additionally, John’s grand piano and a collection of brightly coloured eyeglasses each saw remarkable bids, selling for four and eight times their respective high estimates. As the auction continues to unfold, each sale serves as a testament to Elton John’s enduring influence and the profound impact he has had on the worlds of music, art, and culture.
