Empowering Indian Women in Science: A UNESCO Photo Exhibition at Madras Art Guild

INTRODUCTION

In a vibrant celebration of women’s contributions to the world of science, a UNESCO photo exhibition titled “The Universe of Indian Women in Science” has found its home at the Madras Art Guild festival in Chennai. Running from September 22, 2023, to October 22, 2023, this exhibition is a visual exploration of the incredible journeys and achievements of women scientists in India.

Exploring the Universe of Indian Women in Science

The UNESCO photo exhibition draws its inspiration from the UNESCO publication, “A Braided River – The Universe of Indian Women in Science,” which was published in 2022. Through a captivating array of images, this exhibition captures the emotions, aspirations, and experiences of women scientists at various stages of their careers, both professionally and personally.

These images serve as powerful statement to the dedication and resilience of women who have broken barriers in the fields of science and technology in India. Just as a braided river navigates obstacles on its journey from source to sea, women scientists in India overcome numerous challenges in their work and personal lives.

Empowering Girls and Women in Science

One of the primary goals of the UNESCO exhibition is to inspire and promote the participation of girls and women in the fields of science. By showcasing the remarkable achievements of Indian women scientists, the exhibition aims to increase public support for their entry into scientific disciplines and encourage their retention in science education and careers.

Additionally, the exhibition seeks to raise awareness about the invaluable contributions of women in science and to advocate for gender sensitivity in science education and related professions. It emphasizes that greater female involvement in science, policy-making, engineering, and technological advancements can help address contemporary challenges, including the Triple-Planetary-Crisis.

Insights from UNESCO and Madras Art Guild

Benno Boer, Programme Specialist and Chief of Sector for Natural Sciences at UNESCO New Delhi, expressed the significance of the exhibition. He stated, “This festival encourages budding artists and students to express their art and photography by providing a platform and encouraging them to enrol in the mentorship program to hone their skills with the help of international and national artists.”

Sumi Gupta, the Curator of Madras Art Guild, highlighted the importance of the festival, emphasising its role in supporting young artists and photographers and providing them with opportunities for growth.

Fostering Gender Equality and Awareness

The exhibition draws upon the recommendations presented in “A Braided River: The Universe of Indian Women in Science.” These recommendations include raising awareness of the value of women in science, integrating gender sensitivity into science education and related careers, and organising communication campaigns to underscore the significance of women’s contributions to science.

The Madras Art Guild festival, themed “Fine Balance” and supported by the Yuj Arts Foundation, launched its third edition on September 22, 2023, further contributing to the promotion of art and culture in Chennai.

UNESCO remains committed to advancing gender equality in the world of science and supports the education and empowerment of young girls to ensure their voices and ideas are heard, contributing to global development and peace. The exhibition at the Madras Art Guild is the story of the incredible journeys of Indian women in science and their vital role in shaping the future.
