Art Centrix Space announced an exhibition, ‘Expanded Disciplinarity, Chapter I: Constructing Painterly Relations,‘ which marks the inaugural exhibition of the Art Centrix Grants. This first edition, the Art Centrix Painting Grant 2024, conceived by Sibdas Sengupta, focuses on painterly constructs.
This exhibition will showcase works from ten shortlisted artists exploring diverse painting-based methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches, including Anavi Mullick (Karnataka), Bhimanshu Pandel (Rajasthan), Dakshayani Chippada (Andhra Pradesh), David Malaker (West Bengal), Hemant Gavankar (Maharashtra), Nehal Verma (Rajasthan), Nikesh Ola (Rajasthan), Rakesur Rahaman (West Bengal), Sourov Garai (West Bengal), and Swapnesh Vaigankar (Goa).
Art Centrix Space is committed to fostering artistic exploration and advancing contemporary art discourse in India. The Art Centrix Painting Grant 2024 is designed to support artists in their research, production, and exhibitions, emphasising process-driven approaches that encourage experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration. This grant stands out for several reasons. Each edition will engage with different disciplinary methodologies, moving beyond traditional techniques to explore how medium-specific concepts can be approached through various exchanges in contemporary times. Unlike other art grants, Art Centrix Space provides a support structure and offers substantial financial assistance to the artist, ensuring they have the necessary resources to realise their projects fully. The grant is approached as a curatorial exercise, distinguishing it through rigorous curatorial interventions that help explore complex painterly discourses and challenge established narratives. Space’s aim in this edition is to explore how painterliness can be approached through different exchanges in today’s time. This grant and its inaugural exhibition seek a broader understanding of contemporary painting practices.
‘This exhibition features ten artists from different parts of the country engaging with diverse subjects and artistic research in their practices. As mentioned, the exhibition’s core has developed through the artworks and creative practices, where the painterliness is understood through transitions between disciplines and different ways of understanding contemporary practices. The artworks and the artists selected in this exhibition also strongly refer to the curatorial inquiry of “disciplinary transitoriness” for defining meanings of painterly attributions through inter-dependent subjectivities across mediums, context and materiality, writes Sibdas Sengupta in his curatorial notes.
Art Centrix Space will maintain ongoing contact and support their development and interactions even after the grant period. Mentorship is a crucial aspect of the grant, and we are dedicated to providing guidance, fostering the growth of the artists’ practices, and ensuring their continued success.
