For the First Time India Wins Bronze for Sculpting Snow

Team India, secures third position at an International Snow Sculpture Championship 2025 in USA with ‘Mind in Meditation’

Breckenridge’s International Snow Sculpture Championships is held annually in Colorado USA. Teams from around the world descend on Breckenridge to hand-carve 25-ton blocks of snow into giant, precise works of art. 

This time for its 2025 addition, 12 international snow sculpting teams participated in the competition with India being one of them.

India, participating for the first time secured its first-ever bronze for “Mind in Meditation” a sculpture carved in snow by four sculptors at the international snow sculpting competition. The event was a landmark moment for the history of the craft of snow sculpting in India.

Making their debut on the global stage, the sculpting team, led by Zahoor Din Lone, a sculptor from Kashmir with three other artists –Suhail Mohammad, Mridul Upadhyay and an American resident Matt. The team secured their way to recognition in Colorado, USA. This remarkable win placed South Asia firmly on the world map of snow sculpting. 

India’s third place at the International Snow Sculpture Championship was secured with the team’s striking sculpture, Mind in Meditation, which captivated judges and spectators alike.

Hard-work in Sculpting with Snow

The four-member team worked relentlessly for four days in temperatures plummeting to -35°C. As per the rules of the competition,  Artists are only allowed to use hand tools, creativity and inspiration to bring their ideas to life. No power tools are allowed in the carving.

Teams end up sculpting for countless hours across five days, around 94 hours!  Curating a temporary outdoor art gallery in historic downtown Breckenridge.Despite the cold and harsh conditions and strict time constraints, the team transformed an icy block of snow into a breathtaking sculpture.  India ranked third in a competition that featured teams from all around the world.

Germany secured first place and Mexico finished second.  Other participating teams included those from the USA, Finland, Canada, Mongolia, South Korea, Argentina, and Turkey. A panel of five judges took over six hours to evaluate at least 12 sculptures before determining the final rankings.
