French politician Raphael Glucksmann, a centre-left politician recently stated that France should take back the iconic statue, suggesting that the United States of America, no longer is rooted in similar values that inspired France to gift the monument in the first place.
These remarks were seen as a direct criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies after his re-election, particularly regarding scientific freedom and international relations and made headlines across the media.
History of Iconic Sculpture: The Statue of Liberty
The statue, popularly known as Lady Liberty is a fixture on the New York Harbor horizon. The sculpture was a gift to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the abolition of slavery the year prior in the U.S.
France provided its public funds to construct the statue and Americans fundraised to construct the foundational pedestal through benefit art exhibitions and auctions and a direct call for donations by Joseph Pulitzer in his newspaper, New York World.
The Iconic sculpture was created by a French artist, Auguste Bartholdi, as a present from the people of France to the United States, representing their shared values of freedom and democracy.
Symbolic Importance of the Statue of Liberty
Paris, located in France, does have a smaller replica of the statue on an island in the Seine.
Glucksmann’s remarks are supposed to be a symbolic political statement rather than a genuine demand for its return as the Iconic Statue stands tall in New York Harbour.

The statue as a unique sculpture is a hollow colossus made of copper sheets over a steel framework. its construction was considered one of the greatest technical achievements of the 19th century at the time. Many considered it to be a bridge between art and engineering.
The statue which stands on an island at the entrance to New York Harbor, welcomes millions of immigrants to the United States ever since.
