On this day, a man for whom the term “Sadist” was coined, was born, marking his name in the world of Philosophy, surrealistic art and crime. Marquis de Sade, although a heinous criminal with multiple charges of rape, assault and sadistic pleasures, this guy managed to provocate both criminals and philosophers of the then society.
Sade, a French nobleman, revolutionary politician, philosopher, and writer, was born on 2 June 1740 and died on 2 December 1814. He is most known for his literary representations of libertine sexuality.
He was regarded by the surrealists as one of their forebears, and Guillaume Apollinaire memorably referred to him as “the freest spirit that has yet existed”. Many surrealist artists in the field of visual arts were drawn to the “Divine Marquis.” Man Ray adored Sade because he and other surrealists saw him as an ideal of freedom.”Sade is surrealist in sadism,” the first Surrealist Manifesto (1924) said, and excerpts from Justine’s original draught were published in Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution.
