Meet Mousumi Sircar!

Mousumi Sircar is the Artist of the Week. She is a self-taught artist, whose experiences have taught her the nuances of painting. Growing up in Kolkata, she was thrust into an environment where drawing and painting became inseparable in her life. She also enjoyed studying science and maths, which led her to get a degree in Physics.

After working a few years in IT, her faith in painting grew stronger. Hence, she decided to pursue painting full-time. Her passion had now become her profession. Shobha Broota and Ashok Bhowmick mentored her. The former curated, ‘Panorama,’ a group photography exhibition, in which Sircar was a participating artist. She is currently based in Gurgaon.

Mousumi Sircar’s Art Style

Sircar is a traveller, which has immensely shaped her cultural experiences. She mostly experiments with colour and forms, rather than picking up on a distinct subject. Initially, she started with oil painting, utilising it to create realistic figures and scenes. With time, Mousumi Sircar’s artwork evolved to a slightly abstract, figurative painting via acrylic on canvas. She uses spontaneous gestural brushstrokes instead of drawing. This is her entry point to an unnamed vision; she finds her subjects within those strokes, manoeuvring them; developing them.

You may see in many of Mousumi Sircar’s paintings, you might see a limited harmonious colour palette. Through her vision, Mousumi Sircar implores the viewers to join her in celebrating the beauty of life, people, and their engagement with the environment. These paintings exude a sense of contentment, happiness, and hope. For her painting, ‘Spring,’ the seasonal colours connote her happiness. The bright blue birds are harbingers of spring, the season of colour and joy.

Talking about ‘Blue Mist,’ Sircar provides a poignant depiction of monsoon —serene and beautiful. With a collection of umbrellas amidst the blue-green background, she suggests people walking through the rain. Here, she sets the mood rather than fixating on finer details, appropriately conveying a concept she believes in. In Mousumi Sircar’s ‘Leisure Painting,’ you can easily find the happiness found in companionship, which brings comfort. She leaves the subject undefined, allowing the viewer to interact with her piece and weave a personal peaceful narrative.
