A Dream Realised
The vibrant art scene of Kerala is about to receive a significant addition with the inauguration of the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery. The art gallery, dedicated to the iconic artist Raja Ravi Varma, is set to be officially opened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on 25 Sep, 2023. This two-storey air-conditioned structure represents a longstanding dream for art enthusiasts and admirers of Ravi Varma’s work.
A Legacy Preserved
The Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery aims to provide a dedicated space for 46 of the artist’s paintings, along with a collection of chromolithographs and pencil sketches. These valuable artworks were previously housed at the Sree Chithra Art Gallery and will now find a permanent home in this new establishment.
A Monument to International Renown
Raja Ravi Varma achieved international acclaim for his exquisite artwork, making him a source of pride for Kerala and India as a whole. The establishment of this gallery enhances the legacy, a place where art enthusiasts and history buffs can appreciate his creations up close.
A Vision Materialised
The journey to create this gallery was not without its challenges. However, the foundation stone was laid by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in November 2020, marking the beginning of this ambitious project. Today, this vision has become a reality, showcasing Ravi Varma’s masterpieces for generations to come.
Preserving the Past: The Conservation Lab
In conjunction with the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery, the Department of Museums and Zoos has also established a conservation lab. This facility is dedicated to restoring not only Ravi Varma’s works but also artworks by other artists. The gallery will proudly display the paintings that have been meticulously restored in this lab.
A Comprehensive Collection
The Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery will feature a diverse range of artworks. Alongside the 46 paintings by Ravi Varma himself, visitors can explore 14 chromolithographs, 10 pencil sketches, and two certificates received by the artist for a painting expo held in Chicago. These chromolithographs played a significant role in democratising art, making it accessible to a broader audience and contributing to Ravi Varma’s widespread popularity.
Beyond Ravi Varma
While the gallery primarily celebrates Raja Ravi Varma’s work, it will also showcase 41 paintings by his brother, C. Raja Raja Varma, and several pieces by his uncle and sister, Raja Raja Varma and Mangala Bayi Thampuratti, respectively. Additionally, a selection of paintings by other notable artists, including Frank Brooks, court painter Ramaswami Naidu, Horace van Ruith, and Padmanabhan Thampy, will be on display, providing a well-rounded art experience.
A Total of 134 Works
In total, the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery will exhibit an impressive collection of 134 artworks, offering visitors a comprehensive journey through the world of art. Minister for Museums Ahammad Devarkovil will preside over the inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 12 p.m. The event will be graced by Minister for Culture Saji Cherian and Minister for Zoos J. Chinchurani as chief guests. Chief Secretary V. Venu will deliver the keynote address, and Keralam Museum executive director R. Chandran Pillai will present the report.
The Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery promises to be a cultural gem, celebrating the artistic heritage of Kerala and paying homage to one of India’s most celebrated artists. It is set to become a must-visit destination for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike, adding another layer of richness to the tradition of the region.
