India Art Fair Announces New Contemporary Edition in Mumbai

Jio World Garden to Host India Art Fair Contemporary in 2025

India Art Fair continues its steady growth by launching a new contemporary art edition in Mumbai Called India Art Fair Contemporary, the event will take place at Jio World Garden 13-16 November 2025 and have 50–70 exhibitors. The action is in response to ongoing expansion of the market for contemporary art in India and the fair’s goal of furthering the presence of South Asia on a world stage for art and design.

Building on the Success of Art Mumbai

India Art Fair Contemporary follows another fair that was launched last year in the Mahalaxmi Racecourse (under two tents): Art Mumbai. Art Mumbai was launched by Saffronart owners Dinesh and Minal Vazirani along with Conor Macklin from Grosvenor Gallery and Nakul Dev Chawla, founder of Global Art Hub.

Jaya Asokan who has also spear headed the India Art Fair in New Delhi will direct the India Art Fair Contemporary. In an email response, Asokan clarified that this new fair “is not a direct outcome of Art Mumbai,” but rather “a marker for how the market has now developed — and which they [the India Art Fair] have greatly contributed to in going from strength to strength since their inception in 2008.”

Industry Leaders Show Support

The announcement left Aparajita Jain, Executive Director of the Nature Morte gallery that has recently emerged in Mumbai, happy. India Art Fair Contemporary came at “the time when it had to land in the right city”suitable for world contemporary art scene that’s been building up, said Lekha PoddarBesides strengthening the base of India’s market, this initiative will help international buyers as the transacts get much larger and holier.

Date Clash Sparks Industry Debate

But the overlap of dates between India Art Fair Contemporary and Art Mumbai has triggered concerns. India Art Fair Contemporary is set for 13-16 November 2025, while Art Mumbai will be held on 14-17 November 2025. The whole date made the founders of Art Mumbai, Dinesh and Minal Vazirani — who also co-own it, perplexed as they released a statement saying “We do not understand the logic behind having these 2 fairs run simultaneously & indeed question the business sense of this decision”.

Despite the date controversy, the expansion of art fairs in Mumbai signals a growing confidence in the contemporary art market in India, with industry leaders optimistic about the future.
