With 243 elite foreign galleries from 40 countries and territories, Art Basel Hong Kong is poised to triumphantly return to its pre-pandemic scale in 2024. The renowned art expo has made a strong comeback, as seen by the noteworthy 37% rise in exhibitor numbers from the 2023 edition. The 2024 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong will feature a wide range of artworks from established contemporary artists to up-and-coming talent, covering a variety of market groups. The fact that more than half of the exhibitors are based in the Asia-Pacific area highlights the fair’s dedication to bringing attention to the vibrant art scenes in Asia and beyond.
25 foreign galleries, including Station (Melbourne, Sydney), Tim Van Laere Gallery (Antwerp, Rome), and Mangrove Gallery (Shenzhen), are among the noteworthy newcomers to the exhibitor lineup. In addition, 68 galleries—including well-known ones like Galerie Lelong & Co. (France), Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M. (Italy), kurimanzutto (Mexico), and Experimenter (India)—will be making a return. Other galleries from India include Vadehra Art Gallery (New Delhi), TARQ (Mumbai) and Jhaveri Contemporary (Mumbai).
Preview Days will be held on March 26 and 27 of Art Basel Hong Kong’s 2024 edition, which is slated to take place at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from March 28 to 30. A vibrant citywide programme of events and activations organised in association with galleries, artists, organisations, and cultural partners will supplement the exhibition.
Angelle Siyang-Le, director of Art Basel Hong Kong, expressed delight at the show’s complete return and welcomed exhibitors from all over the world, including both new and returning participants. Siyang-Le highlighted Hong Kong’s critical position as an Asia-Pacific region’s and Asia’s strategic cultural hub, encouraging cooperation and innovation motivated by artists and art. One of the main attractions of Art Basel Hong Kong, the galleries sector, will feature pieces from 201 top galleries, displaying a wide variety of art, including digital and textile art. Sheila Hicks’ innovative use of fabrics and thread by London-based Alison Jacques and Taro Nasu’s (Tokyo) exhibition of Ryoji Ikeda’s (renowned for his research of raw sound) works are two noteworthy presentations.
Discoveries, an exhibition featuring 22 galleries showcasing solo exhibitions by up-and-coming artists, will concentrate on themes such as public space and urban growth. Twenty galleries will be featured in the Insights section, with an emphasis on historical exhibits and artists from Asia and the Asia-Pacific area.
All things considered, the 2024 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong is expected to offer a thorough and lively survey of artistic output throughout the Asia-Pacific area, honouring the variety and inventiveness of the world art scene. The presence of both new and established galleries, along with an extensive schedule of events, suggests that this significant art show will make a lively and much-anticipated return.
