Is Mumbai Ready to Embrace the Global Spotlight with Art Mumbai 2023?

Introduction

In a significant stride towards enriching India’s cultural tapestry, the inaugural Art Mumbai is set to take place from November 16-19 at the Mahalakshmi Race Course. Spearheaded by visionaries Minal Vazirani, Dinesh Vazirani, Nakul Dev Chawla, and Conor Macklin, the fair aims to unite India’s premier galleries and artists under one roof.

Setting the StageWith 53 galleries already securing booths, Art Mumbai is poised to be a grand celebration of Indian artistry. The choice of Mumbai as the host city stems from its historical significance as a major player in the Indian art market. Minal Vazirani, co-founder of Saffronart, reflects on the city’s role, emphasising that Mumbai once constituted nearly 70% of the entire Indian art market.

Stellar Lineup: Masters and Contemporary Voices

The event promises a rich array of Indian art, showcasing the works of luminaries like SH Raza, Krishen Khanna, MF Husain, and Amrita Sher-Gil. Noteworthy contributions from international galleries, such as Dubai-based Volte Art Projects presenting a work by Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović, further elevate the global resonance of Art Mumbai.

Beyond the Canvas: Programming and Diversity

Art Mumbai extends beyond traditional exhibitions, incorporating panel discussions, film screenings, and cultural programming to spotlight Mumbai’s diverse art scene. Galleries with a focus on contemporary art, indigenous art, and antiquities are strategically placed alongside discussions on ‘Art in Mumbai’ and ‘Women to Watch.’ This multidimensional approach aims to encapsulate the essence of Mumbai’s artistic identity.

Nurturing the Art Ecosystem

Ashish Anand, CEO and MD at DAG, emphasises the importance of art education and the exhibition of works of historic rarity. The fair seeks to offer a platform not only for serious collectors but also for art enthusiasts, fostering a more inclusive and approachable environment. Indigenous art finds a spotlight, with galleries showcasing a cross-section of Indian art and artists.

Mumbai’s Artistic Renaissance

The absence of an art fair in Mumbai has long been felt, and Art Mumbai fills this void. While acknowledging the success of the India Art Fair in Delhi, Minal Vazirani affirms that a city with Mumbai’s rich history and diverse aesthetic traditions can indeed accommodate more than one art fair. Art Mumbai is poised to become a pivotal event, expanding the market and providing a varied calendar for galleries.

Democratising Art Access

Crucially, Art Mumbai aims to break down barriers and demystify the art world. Minal Vazirani hopes the fair will alleviate hesitation and intimidation often associated with visiting galleries. The casual atmosphere of an art fair allows for open conversations, encouraging people to engage with gallerists, learn about art, artists, and openly discuss pricing.

A Glimpse into the Future

With the Indian art market estimated at about ₹3,000 crore for registered auction sales and expected to grow at a CAGR of 20%, Art Mumbai is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s art landscape. As the fair unfolds, it holds the promise of not just an exhibition but a celebration of India’s artistic heritage and contemporary expression.
