King Charles III’s Travel Art From Jodhpur’s Lake Palace Will Be Showcased in the UK
Bal Samand Lake Palace in Jodhpur is planning a special exhibition at Buckingham Palace. It will honour King Charles III’s international travels and will open in July. Entitled ‘The King’s Tour Artists,’ the exhibition will feature over 70 items from the monarch’s private art collection. Many of these will be publicly displayed for the first time with the opening of the State Rooms.

Accompanying the exhibition is a publication titled The Art of Royal Travel: Journeys with the King. It features artists’ insights and over 100 images that document the personal moments and experiences from these state visits. The Royal Collection Trust added, “Forty-two artists to have undertaken this role, who collectively have visited 95 countries during 69 tours, will be represented in the exhibition and publication.”
Exhibition Highlights!
A highlight of the exhibition is Balsamand Palace, created by London artist Luke Martineau. It was inspired by a royal visit to India that Martineau participated in during 2010, when he accompanied the then-Prince Charles for the Commonwealth Games’ opening ceremony. The Royal Collection Trust stated, “he carefully studied the itinerary to plan ahead, ensuring there was time to respond to scenes unfolding before him, such as the sunset on the lake next to ‘Balsamand Palace’, bathing it in light. He later noted that the trip formed a major inspiration for his future work.”

Starting on July 10, these artworks will be showcased in the Buckingham Palace Ballroom. Selected by the King from his collection, the pieces present evocative interpretations of royal tours, depicting mood, landscapes, and cultural nuances in ways that differ from standard photographs. They emphasise King Charles III’s journeys, illustrating scenes from Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
History Behind Royal Outings and Artistic Inspiration
The tradition of inviting artists on royal outings was initiated in 1985, when Prince Charles requested John Ward to join him on an official trip to Italy, encouraging him to capture any scenes that sparked his artistic inspiration.
This initiative has provided both established and emerging artists with a unique creative opportunity, allowing them to create work inspired by the countries visited.
