Kolkata’s Iconic Trams Get a Durga Puja Makeover

Introduction

The West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) has embarked on a unique initiative to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Kolkata’s iconic tramways and the recognition of Durga Puja as an intangible cultural heritage. Special trams with revamped interiors and exteriors have been introduced, paying homage to Bengal’s greatest festival. These trams will run from Tollygunge to Ballygunge and back until the end of the year, offering passengers a delightful journey through art and history.

A Heritage Tribute

The trams have been transformed in collaboration with Asian Paints, renowned for their Sharad Samman in Kolkata. Madan Mitra, Chairman of WBTC, describes the initiative as a “heritage tribute to the city’s Puja spirit.” Rajanvir Singh Kapur, Managing Director of WBTC, notes that Durga Puja provided the perfect backdrop for this unique tram experience.

Exquisite Hand-Painted Artworks

The first bogie of the tram is adorned with exquisite hand-painted artworks that pay homage to Kumartuli, the traditional quarter in North Kolkata known for idol-making and pottery. These artworks vividly capture the essence of Durga Puja, including scenes of ‘Sindoor Khela’ and ‘Dhunuchi naach.’ The tram also tells inspiring stories, including that of a visually-impaired artist with exceptional skills and the courageous women ‘dhakis’ who challenge the traditionally male-dominated performing arts.

Immersive Puja-Themed Decor

Inside the tram, passengers are welcomed by Puja-themed decor, intricate ‘Alpona’ art, and a visual narrative reminiscent of a museum. Interactive elements and QR codes enable passengers to delve deeper into the heartwarming stories of the ‘People of Puja’ as they enjoy their tram ride.

A Journey Through Time

Stepping into the second bogie is like entering a time machine that transports passengers to a bygone era of heritage and grandeur in Kolkata. The exteriors of this section of the tram are adorned with elements inspired by West Bengal’s rich culture and iconic landmarks. The artwork showcases the dramatic elements of famous Puja symbols, emphasising the enduring spirit of celebration that has remained constant in Bengal.

These special trams are not just a mode of transportation but a moving canvas that celebrates the rich history and cultural significance of Kolkata and Durga Puja. As they traverse the Tollygunge route, they provide a unique opportunity for passengers to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of Bengal’s greatest festival while relishing the city’s enduring charm.
