Museo Camera and The Chaibrary are joining hands to organize a 4-day printmaking course under the mentorship of renowned visual artist Ananda Moy Banerji. This cooperative project, which will be hosted from 1st– 4th June 2023 seeks to engage individuals in learning the versatile technique of linocut printing.
Founded in 2009, Museo Camera is the largest non-profit crowd-funded Centre for Photographic Arts in the South East Asia region. The Chaibrary, presented by Ocular Productions, is an original immersive discussion programme, in honour of Indian modern artist Jai Zharotia’s eternal legacy. It explores the anguish and ecstasy of the creative as a dedication to an artist’s never-ending journey of inspiration and creativity.
Linocut, also known as lino printing, or linoleum art is a sheet of linoleum (often placed on a wooden block) that is used as the relief surface. Using a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel, or gouge, a design is carved into the linoleum surface, with the elevated (uncarved) sections reflecting the reverse (mirror image) of the printed parts. The process is quite similar to woodcut, but because linoleum doesn’t have a grain, linocuts may produce a wider range of effects than woodcuts.
The workshop will focus on the depths of the process of linocut printmaking, while also promoting this technique of artwork. It will be mentored by renowned Indian visual artist Ananda Moy Banerji. Banerji, who was born in 1959 in Kolkata, India, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in Painting from the College of Art in Delhi (1975 to 1980), before obtaining a Master’s degree in fine arts in Printmaking from Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan (1983 to 1985). Later, he received a Charles Wallace India Trust scholarship and proceeded to Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts in London for a research associateship in printmaking.
Apart from participating in numerous platforms across the globe like India, Japan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Korea, USA, Germany, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Russia, Egypt, Greece, and Norway, Banerji also has multiple awards and recognitions under his belt, including the 64th and 67th Annual Best Exhibit Awards from the A.I.F.A.C.S. in New Delhi. 20th Sahitya Kala Parishad Award, 1991, New Delhi. Lalit Kala Akademi’s 1994 recipient of the XXXVIth national Akademi Award. Japan’s 2001 Nagasawa Art Park Residency Award, among many others. He was also a recipient of a cultural scholarship by the Indian Government’s Ministry of Culture and Human Resources.
Under Banerji’s seasoned guidance, the four-day workshop will undoubtedly be productive, as well as a wonderful platform for mastering the craft. Therefore, be sure not to pass up this fantastic offer.
