Loewe’s Exhibition on Teapots

Loewe has announced that it will host an exhibition of specially designed teapots made by 25 renowned artists, designers, and architects at the 2025 Salone del Mobile in Milan. The series will be displayed at Palazzo Citterio, close to the famous Sforzesco Castle, from April 7th to 13th, marking the ninth time the brand will participate in this high-end design fair.

To create this show, Loewe has invited a variety of contributors to redefine and redefine the conventional teapot shape. They all use basic materials like porcelain and ceramic but introduce innovative changes that produce a variety of finishes, textures, and glazes.

For instance, British painter Rose Wylie has created a teapot with a highly exaggerated lid and fluted details inspired by British Royal Albert china. Also included in the show is Korean artist Jane Yang-D’Haene, who has designed a long teapot covered with frayed strips of clay. Other artists, such as Akio Niisato and Takayuki Sakiyama, have integrated light and motion into their works, which increases the sensory effect. Also, the art of other painters, such as Chinese painter Lu Bin and South African painter Madoda Fani, challenges standard ceramic production norms in that they leave their completed artwork unglazed.

The artists taking part in the exhibition also incorporate non-traditional material to further decorate their ceramic and porcelain teapots. For example, Lebanese American artist Simone Fattal and Japanese sculptor Shozo Michikawa have both incorporated woven leather handles in their works. Elsewhere, British designer David Chipperfield features a teapot in glazed cobalt with a copper handle.

Loewe hosted a similar exhibition at the 2024 Salone del Mobile, where 24 artists showcased lamp designs. Featured artists included Jennifer Lee, Young Soo Lee, Nicholas Byrne, and Anthea Hamilton.

These design showcases highlight Loewe’s continuing effort to promote the blend of art and craft. On February 12th, the Loewe Foundation announced the shortlist for its 2025 Craft Prize, recognizing 30 artists from 18 different countries. These chosen artists will showcase their pieces at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid between May 30th and June 29th. Additionally, in October 2024, the fashion brand partnered with Studio Voltaire, commissioning five artists, such as Alvaro Barrington and Sheila Hicks, to create limited edition pieces.
