Artists formerly labelled as Russians now classified as Ukrainians

After facing pressure online, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has changed the wall text for at least three artists who were formerly labeled as Russians. Those painters are now classified as Ukrainians, and the wall text for one of their works has been amended to mention the destruction of cultural property in the country by Russian troops. The three artists—Ivan Aivazovsky, Arkhyp Kuindzhi, and Ilya Repin—were all active during the 19th century. Depending on the institution, they have been labeled as either Russian or Ukrainian, given their movements over the course of their careers and the redrawing of both countries’ borders. “The Met continually researches and examines objects in its collection in order to determine the most appropriate and accurate way to catalogue and present them,” a Met spokesperson told ARTnews. “The cataloguing of these works has been updated following research conducted in collaboration with scholars in the field.” Details on Art News.
Cozomo de’ Medici Donates 22 Digital Artworks to LACMA

Pseudonymous non-fungible token (NFT) collector and influencer Cozomo de’ Medici announced on Monday that he is donating several of his digital artworks to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Comprised of 22 works by 13 artists, de’ Medici’s donation features one CryptoPunk from NFT collective Larva Labs, a piece from generative artist Dmitri Cherniak’s Ringers collection and art from artificial intelligence (AI) artist Claire Silver. De’ Medicisaid in a Twitter thread that he hopes the donation will emphasize the significance of digital art as pieces sit next to works of legendary artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keefe and Andy Warhol. “With this gift, my goal was to help bridge the worlds of on-chain art and contemporary art, which until now have separately existed,” said de’ Medici in a press release. “I’m thrilled to have these historically significant on-chain works contextualized beside many iconic works of art in LACMA’s collection.” Read more on Coin Desk.
London’s Victoria and Albert Museum to showcase masterpieces by Donatello

Following on from last year’s magnificent Donatello exhibition in Florence, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)—in collaboration with Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Museo Nazionale del Bargello and Berlin’s Staatliche Museen—is opening its leg of the touring show on 11 February. This, the first major UK exhibition dedicated to the radical Italian Renaissance master, will not only benefit from a feast of stunning partnership loans, but will also draw on the V&A’s own scholarship and collection of works by the great sculptor and his contemporaries. Highlights from Florence include Donatello’s early full-size marble of a youthful David and his audacious bronzeAttis-Amorino (around 1440), as well as bronze reliefs from the High Altar of the Basilica of St Anthony in Padua.
