Nikit Agarwal and Bhumi Shah: \’Art is not an option — it is the core of design\’

For the past six years, Nikit Agarwal and Bhumi Shah have worked in tandem as architects to bring alive their design vision across projects in the Western region of India. Under the umbrella of One Plus 1 / One Space Studio, the dynamic duo has strived since 2016 to successfully transform locations into magically habitable spaces across Baroda, Ahmedabad, Surat, Valsad, Vapi and more. While they specialize in residential projects, having accomplished the setting up of numerous beautiful 2BHK and 3BHK spaces, Bhumi also has a Masters in City Planning, bringing in a broader perspective into the designs. She and Nikit both believe that it is key to bring together functionality and aesthetics to provide the customised and efficient creation of bespoke homes. While their team of young, skilled and trained professionals builds home with dedication, they also have the guidance of experts when it comes to various solutions, and smoothly execute all levels of planning around regulations, materials, furnishings and more. Another point of attention for them is to execute a project that exceeds expectations, but stays within budgets. However, one of the most important aspects, they both agree, is the inherent incorporation of art into any project. Subscribing to the core concept of design itself being an art, they have a unique manner of execution, wherein several leftover materials at the end of a project art utilized to create pre-planned art, which then becomes a part of the structure in its walls, ceilings and flooring, if not as varied pieces and installations. From wood to metal, this artwork enhances its surroundings immeasurably, but is always incorporated on the wishes of the end user, who Nikit and Bhumi believe should fall in love with the space they plan to exist within. The result often displays the use of plush materials, sophisticated colour palettes, well-planned lighting and area, eye-catching wall art, modern minimalism and yet a classically comforting core..
