Marc Jacobs’ 40th Anniversary Campaign Showcases Cindy Sherman’s Transformative Artistry Alongside Music Luminaries

In a nod to four decades of iconic fashion, Marc Jacobs has unveiled its Spring/Summer 2024 campaign, featuring a stellar cast of friends and collaborators. German photographer Juergen Teller captured the essence of the campaign with a series of lo-fi shots, positioning each subject solo on the streets in front of Marc Jacobs’ headquarters in lower Manhattan.

A Star-Studded Lineup

The campaign showcases a diverse array of personalities, including artist and photographer Cindy Sherman and musicians FKA Twigs, Lil Uzi Vert, and Bladee. Each individual brings their unique style and energy to the forefront, creating a visual spectacle that mirrors the brand’s legacy of bold creativity.

Cindy Sherman’s Multifaceted Persona

In a standout moment from the campaign, Cindy Sherman, the septuagenarian artist, embraced two distinct personas that have previously appeared in her own work. One moment captures her in full grunge attire, with long faux-brunette hair, seated on the side of the street. In another striking image, Sherman transforms into a blonde figure with gloved hands, standing gracefully outside Marc Jacobs’ iconic 72 Spring Street entrance, defying gravity in platform heels.

Decades-Long Collaboration

The collaboration between Marc Jacobs, Juergen Teller, and Cindy Sherman traces back almost two decades. In 2005, they co-published “Ohne Titel,” a collection of unpublished images featuring Teller and Sherman as eerie twins. This creative partnership reflects Jacobs’s commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and attracting an audience that truly understands the essence of their work.

Sherman’s Presence Across Artistic Arenas

Cindy Sherman’s appearance in the campaign aligns with two significant exhibitions showcasing her work. In New York, a new series at Hauser & Wirth features 30 images where Sherman manipulates her own portraits through prosthetic additions and digital alterations. Simultaneously, the “Anti-Fashion” exhibition at the Deichtorhallen museum in Hamburg explores Sherman’s critical engagement with the fashion industry, challenging conventional ideals of flawlessness.
