Museum on Wheels Brings ‘Art, Culture, and History One Step Ahead of Audience

Krispin Joseph PX

Museum culture is now circulating the significance of our great past continually. If anyone, especially the student community, doesn’t have time to go to the Museum, then the Museum will come near you. Museums, especially outside Indian museums, are not accessible to everyone. The concept of a museum is related to a vast building and objects and artefacts shown in a certain way.

Now that concept of museums is challenged by the idea of museums on wheels. Only 15 per cent of people visit museums annually, and the rest are outside the radar of the ‘cultural practice of museum visit’. The exciting idea of Museum on Wheels encapsulates the museum culture and brings that to the audience where they are in the most remote corners of the world.

In 2015, Mumbai-based NGO Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) launched an outreach program of Museum On Wheels, and now that project led into the national capital for displays around the student-public community. People can see the objects and artefacts directly from our great heritage that only can be found in history books and the internet, or the remotest sites of heritage locations, forts, temples and caves or in the museums situated somewhere. Everybody gets some idea about our rich heritage without a museum visit; the Museum on Wheels bring the historical documents one step ahead of schools, colleges, Municipal departments, remote villages, and many Institutes related to such activities.

The vast bus used for the touring Museum, with no fixed exhibition, constantly changes the objects and artefacts from the collection of a wide range of things related to old Indian Culture. The bus is specially customised and readied for the proceeding workshops and activities that help comprehend, recreate and feel the mindset and science behind the thoughts and work done in ancient India. This Museum on Wheels project starts to tour Delhi as a part of the International Museum Expo 2023, including many artefacts, dioramas, replicas and models.

“The challenge lay in connecting and engaging with audiences situated far away, geographically and in terms of access. The question arose: How could we bridge this gap and reach those who couldn’t physically visit art galleries? This led to the pursuit of innovative solutions to connect with and captivate audiences, regardless of their location or physical presence, creating a meaningful and accessible museum experience for all; CSMVS, director-general Dr Sabyasachi Mukherjee Talking about their mission.
