NGMA Takes Over Bhubaneshwar

The Central government has decided to establish a branch of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Bhubaneswar. Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi recently presented a memorandum to Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi regarding this matter. Sarangi shared this information in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In reply to the proposal, Shekhawat pledged to take the necessary actions to set up an NGMA branch in the capital of Odisha soon.

The Whole Story

On September 10, 2024, the BJP MP, Sarangi sent a letter to Shekhawat, advocating for an National Gallery of Modern Art branch in Bhubaneswar. In support of the proposal, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi sent a letter to the Union Minister on September 25, 2024, emphasizing the gallery’s capacity to preserve and showcase Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.

The subject was revisited on March 13, 2025, during Sarangi’s discussion with Sekhawat, who promised that the initial preparations for the gallery would begin soon.

Is There Really a Need for Another NGMA

Aparajita Sarangi noted “Bhubaneswar is emerging as an educational hub with several universities and institutions dedicated to various fields of study, including fine arts. A branch of National Gallery of Modern Art in the city would serve as a valuable resource for students. At present, there is no NGMA branch in Eastern India. Thus, Bhubaneswar is an ideal location for expanding the gallery’s presence.”

In her memorandum, she also adds, “The establishment of an NGMA branch in Bhubaneswar would significantly contribute to the cultural and artistic landscape of the region, providing multifaceted benefits to both the local population and the state as a whole. A branch of the NGMA in Bhubaneswar would serve as a major attraction for tourists, both domestic and international”

Sarangi also emphasized that Odisha boasts a rich heritage of art and craftsmanship, with many skilled artists seeking opportunities to display their creations. A National Gallery of Modern Art branch in the state capital would enable cultural exchanges and partnerships among artists from various regions. She notes, “Once established, this gallery will not only enrich Odisha’s cultural landscape but also educate future generations about India’s ancient heritage and culture,”

She also added, “Odisha is well-known for its vibrant culture, unique arts and historical significance. It would complement the existing historical sites including Konark Sun Temple and Puri Jagannath Temple.”
